You dont have to confiscate all the guns.
But... people cant show up at the range with them, or generally carry them in public. As soon as someone has one in public, no one has to wait for them to shoot. If the weapon is in plain view during a domestic disturbance, traffic stop, or any other law enforcement encounter, then it is not simply a lawful firearm sitting over there in the corner or in the back of the car. Those types of things, plus the attrition due to inability to transfer, or owners estates disposing of them, will significantly reduce the ability of people to casually own and transport these weapons.
On top of that, there will be a reduced incidence of stolen weapons or circumstances where a young person runs off with mom or dads weapon, since many actually law abiding people will dispose of them.
There was no national confiscation program for lawn darts. When was the last time you saw one?

(182,877 posts)Gun related sentencing for things like domestic violence, DUIs, etc. A set of crimes for which special court rulings may be applied. A judge could order the convicted to get rid of guns that they own. Could they stay in the house? That I'm not sure of. The sentence would be like probation - if the convicted is later caught with or using a gun then the are sentenced for that crime retroactively.

(62,444 posts)Plenty of shooters never had a bad day before they had one.
If semi-auto weapons were banned and required to be subject to a buy back or other program by a date certain, then there is a significant improvement in public safety which comes from the fact that any having any such weapon in plain view during any casual lawful LE contact is an offense, and that we dont have to wait to find out what they were intending to do with it. There are several effects which, from that point, cause attrition of the supply on a monotonic downward slope.

(12,422 posts)In the 30s...it is called the National Firearms Act of 1934...Roosevelt knew what to do, because he was standing beside Cermak who was killed that day by a Thompson submachine gun...
Unfortunately our politicians have not raised the tax of 200$...which would greatly reduce the weapons purchase...
This is one way we can reduce weapons of war on our streets.
Another is to offer buybacks...at city and state levels.

(54,770 posts)cant claim to be law-abiding, and should be subject to hefty fines.
I suspect if it really came down to it, a lot of criminal holdouts could be identified by matching serial numbers.
Nothing will be 100%, but any improvement is helpful.

That'll get the ball rolling.

(25,479 posts)There isn't a deep, long-term, often-irrational, cultural, national obsession with lawn darts as there is with guns.
There also isn't a vague, open-for-interpretation, Constitutional link to them.

(16,201 posts)Thats the problem with comparison. They were banned from retail sale (mostly - the halves are sold and are easily assembled) but not banned from possessing or reselling.

I was asked how I'd address people's fears that we will take away their assault rifles.
I want to be clear: That's exactly what we're going to do. Americans who own AR-15s and AK-47s will have to sell their assault weapons. All of them.

(4,448 posts)Lawn Darts were really a "soft ban".
There is no penalty for owning them. You can still sell them. If you have a machine shop in your garage, they are pretty easy to make and it's not illegal to do sio.
What you cannot do, is MARKET and sell them as toys.

(38,326 posts)At some point it became okay to tell a guest that no, they could not smoke in your house.
My dad's parents didn't smoke but they always had ash trays, lighters, and even a few cigarettes out for guests who smoked.
It was considered good manners.
There's nobody left in my family who smokes.
At my brother's house a guest recently asked if he could smoke. My brother's wife told him not in the house, he could go outside by the fire pit. Soon after that the guy lit up INSIDE THE HOUSE and my brother told him to get the fuck out and never come back. (My sister-in-law wasn't in the room at the time. She might have been less polite.)
There will come a time when simply talking about gun fetishes in mixed company will be a horrible faux-pas similar to bragging about drunk driving. Or smoking in the home of someone who has asked you not to smoke. Maybe it already is.
