How Showbiz Swallowed Democracy

Is anyone entertaining enough to beat Trump? As we enter the heart of the 2020 campaign, that’s the only question that matters.

The U.S. and the U.K. are not in the grips of the far right. They’re in the grips of the farcical right. It’s a big difference. The far right mastered imagery-manufacture to promote a political ideology. The farcical right uses political ideology to promote imagery-manufacture. The conservative movement has been overtaken by performative stupidity. Trump is a man who cannot dress himself properly. He tells so many lies and makes so many mistakes it’s nearly impossible to list them. But he’s hilarious. In Britain, Johnson is a similar figure of fun. He is famous for driving expensive cars which are falling apart, for showing up unprepared to events, for his Bertie Wooster-ish ability to fall ass-backwards into triumph. On a smaller scale, Canada was a pioneer of right-wing nonsense: When Toronto found out that Mayor Rob Ford was smoking crack, his approval ratings went up. Ford’s brother Doug, widely reported to be a drug dealer in his youth, is now premier of Ontario.
