(2,771 posts)A day in the future when we still hold the House and Rep. Plame chairs a committee on which Rep. Cheney sits. Is there an emoji for rubbing together ones hands in glee?

(7,526 posts)With a number of well-qualified minority candidates running (list is farther down in the article):

Yes it's a great ad produced by a well-known PR guy but don't we need more minorities in Congress, especially from a district that is mostly Latino/Native American?
DFW
(54,434 posts)As an Anglo, Valerie is a minority in her district. No two ways about it.
I still think she'd do a kick-ass job as their rep in the House, and so what if she isn't a Latino or Native American? If she will do her district a world of good, she could be a Hindu for all I care.
We need smart, dedicated, intelligent, dynamic people in Congress. I look at that first, their ethnicity second.

(7,526 posts)If not, then maybe you are not in a position to tell them how to vote. There are good minority candidates who are running who also have those qualities who could also do a good job. Fact is, they will probably split the vote while Plame will get the white voters out of Santa Fe and probably win. I still say - all things being equal as they are here with several good candidates - that minority-majority districts should be represented by those minorities. I'm also not a big fan of celebrity worship.

(9,657 posts)I hope for the day when we judge people by the content of their character ...but that's just me
Bradshaw3
(7,526 posts)More by celebrity than knowledge of those running. I hope we can one day judge by content of character. From what I've read and heard several others in the race also pass the character test.
I also hope for a day when minorities in this country get the representation they deserve.
questionseverything
(9,657 posts)ranked choice voting would make it so several similar candidates could run and not split their base...I personally think we would get great candidates (not that we don't now) just easier for new ideas ,new peops to break in
DFW
(54,434 posts)TX-32 finally ousted the odious Pete Sessions and elected Colin Allred, and my district is definitely majority white Anglo (Colin is not). So what if he's not white? He's doing a credible job representing us, and that 's what matters most to me. I took half an hour to speak to him and find out what he's all about, and his character was convincing enough for me.
Same goes for Valerie. She happens to be a personal friend, so we can leave off the "celebrity worship" crap right there. I can vouch for her character just fine. Are there are minority candidates in her district who could do the the job as well? Maybe. My friends at Emily's List in D.C. are backing one of them (for now). All fine with me. I don't know their candidate, and there is no reason for her to know me, since I'm a Texan living in Germany. In the meantime, they are reaching out to Valerie, and will obviously back her if she wins the nomination. I back Valerie because she is smart, tough, honest, and she knows and loves her district. She also knows more about Washington than most of us would care to.

"I have a dream that my four children will one day not be judged by the color of their skin but the content of their character." MLK Jr. August 28, 1963 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in D.C.
If people don't vote the way you want them to, talk to them, convince them of the error of their ways. Teach them. You can make a difference. Use the power of love to overcome the love of power. Is she drunk on power and a little trigger happy? Maybe she should be working for the CIA just not undercover? Is she smart, popular, and progressive? Maybe Governor of NM is a better fit. Y'all voters decide for yourselves.
DFW
(54,434 posts)Valerie has never HAD any power to get drunk on. I take it you have never met her or have the slightest idea what she is like.

(37,748 posts)"Some of the minorities in the race are women..."
And should the voters so decide, they will vote for minorities. Which does not detract in anyway from Plame's own candidacy as well. Only you are doing as much...
(I do find it a wee ironic that as you chide others that it's not our place to instruct them on how to vote, you yourself are doing the precise same thing)

(81,425 posts)And by rights there should be many more women in Congress if its to be truly representative of the voting public. Maybe even a tad more women than men, since women actually comprise the majority by sheer NUMBERS.
