(36,747 posts)Independent now, but I think he will do it to help his re-election chances in MI-03.

(4,399 posts)He won't be the first, but if he signals he's willing to make another presidential run next year and starts openly condemning Trump enough Republicans will fall in line behind him.

(3,579 posts)Because as Trump is damaged more and more - and it is possible that he might be removed from office (GOP have to think about their political careers and at some point with more and more damming information - they will throw him under the bus). Because how the RNC has stacked the deck against anyone challenging Trump - the GOP might be forced to just get anyone to run for the GOP as president in 2020. Mitt has the name recognition.

(32,706 posts)The GOP is toxic now and for the next 5 years at least.
Why would Mitt Romney want to run and lose again? He's better off sitting on the sidelines and watching Chump self-destruct.

(4,399 posts)If the evidence is bad enough, he might decide that "National Saviour" is a label he likes as much as "Mr President".
2020 is a write-off for the Republicans but nobody else on the right would be able to touch him in 2024.

(29,218 posts)could be another 9 years before he even tries to run again

(4,490 posts)Maybe in 2024 if he's not feeling to old. If Trump were removed from office, he wouldn't have much time to get a campaign together, and lots of Republican voters won't be too happy with him. The problem for anyone that may flip is that Trump really does represent the values of the majority of Republicans.

(58,685 posts)a timely step in this situation would propel him into the Repub limelight as a "moderate."

(73,581 posts)It must be humiliating for Mitt to see a jackass like Trump as president. And he doesn't want to wait until 2024 for another shot at it.

(73,581 posts)The petty thief that started that "religion" was from the next town over from me. When the county built a new jail, people went through the numerous boxes of records in the old building's basement.I was primarily interested in copies of the treaties with the Iroquois, as this was the "western front" after the Revolutionary War. But I was happily surprised to find there were numerous records about Smith's many, many crimes here -- the crimes that resulted in his having to leave the area in a hurry.

(34,661 posts)All depends on the Articles and who or whom might be named as conspirators.
And the key will be who or whom are asked to serve on the Investigative Panel and that will be key as to how wide this Impeachment Investigation becomes.
