I wonder. It would be simple enough to do. If The Donald is just a dragging anchor for the GOOPers, they can rid themselves of him very easily. Just let the House impeach and then throw the bum out.
There must be some Republicans who are thinking about this, with the 2020 election looming, don't you think?

(39,377 posts)They lost control of their base a long time ago but they were still able to sell moderate (for them) alternatives with electability arguments (ie Romney). Then came Trump. I dont know what the rebuilding effort looks like but it isnt going to start now when they have the White House and his support from the base is still very strong.

(43,049 posts)The biggest problem in Congress is the fear of being primaried by someone more extreme. Remember that in the end they work for their constituents and you can't do the job when you piss off you constituents, no matter how stupid they may be.
AOC's win woke up a lot of them in both parties.

(5,530 posts)Except they are afraid of his base. As long as they are on board, they risk electoral annihilation.
And frankly, the base is anchored by conservative media. If Fox and others toss him, it MIGHT give the GOP enough breathing room to turn on him.
I say might because I am not even sure that it would work. I think the base is so invested that they would abandon the conservative media before they abandon Trump. For instance, if FOX turned, I suspect there would be an exodus to OAN which is even worse. Being told what you want to hear is a powerful salve in uncertain times.

(5,530 posts)But they are large enough to affect the GOP Primaries.
The GOP has decreased in membership as moderates have fled to Independent status. That leaves the mouthbreathers choosing their candidates. It is evidenced by how high Trump's approval numbers are within the GOP. His supporters are all that is left.
In theory, they could feel safer after their primaries. But that would be too late to turn on Trump and have him replaced.

(15,389 posts)At some point - whether we reach it or not - there is a tipping point where most republicans will gladly throw Trump under a bus to protect what they can of their careers, and I would think McConnell is one of them. McConnell is evil, but he's no dummy. If he does it then a lot of undecided and even some stupider completely pro-Trump republicans will see the writing on the wall. Lindsay Graham is not one, though, that can be convinced.

The answer is Never and a Resounding Never.
I spoke to my Republican aunt about an hour ago. She dismissed this as nothing. These were her words, "Trump knows he might run against Biden. He needs some information about him. Everybody does that."
That's it. That's their caliber. The naive types frame it that way while the frothing Simplistic Angry Males savor everything Trump does, and are desperate for him to take it exponentially further.
Understand the current Republican party that way and these silly threads will no longer exist.

(6,044 posts)from the Bush camp of the Republican Party? Romney has been waiting for an opening and here it is.
Romney has already jumped forward with his "deeply troubling" remarker the transcript. He has appeal to the anti-immigration Republicans.
Republicans need to get Trump out before February in order to have what they consider a decent chance at winning in 2020.
Romney has strong credentials regarding Russia--they all laughed in 2012 when he stated that Russia was a major threat but time has proved him correct.
MineralMan
(146,325 posts)However, so many Republicans in Congress are retiring so as not to have to face another election season. Romney, really, represents that category of Republicans, and the far-right base doesn't like that category one bit. There's a big problem in the GOP right now.
