So the topic at today's family gathering was the GOP convention ...

Full disclosure: the RWers in the family weren't there today. It was just Dems and moderate Republicans, so the room wasn't exactly "Tea Party" friendly, LOL! Anyway ... a few things that were mentioned:

Everyone was shocked by the lies! We all agreed that politicians have always twisted things a bit to suit their agenda, but no one has ever seen that kind of blatant lying by an entire political party at a national convention. Sure ... we've seen individuals lie during interviews and campaign rallies, but there was something about seeing that many people telling that many lies at the same event that was a real eye-opener.

No one can understand how Romney is polling so close to Obama. The general feeling was "WTF???"

Everyone agrees that the GOP has become disgustingly (and frighteningly) anti-women!

Universal single payer health care is what we need ... but "Obamacare" is a step in the right direction. ("They had to take what they could get, but they must keep building on it.&quot

Although no one really wants to believe it, they think the GOP "knows" they have this election wrapped up because it's the only thing that would explain their behavior. They chose a weak, hated candidate and they seem to be deliberately trying to alienate almost everyone. They have doubled-down on extremist positions that are very unpopular with the majority of Americans and their entire platform is a big "F**k You" to anyone who isn't a rich, straight, white, Christian man or a corporation. Bottom line: everyone (ages 19-79) fears what will happen if the GOP wins it all.

The hottest topic of conversation was - you guessed it - Clint Eastwood! After the laughter subsided, we began to have a serious discussion about it. I mentioned that there was some speculation about whose side he's actually on and everyone was intrigued (and amused) by the idea. My two cents worth ... forget the rambling, the messy hair and the empty chair. The thing that baffles me the most about Eastwood's appearance is the timing. He's a lifelong Republican who has always been involved in politics. He has supported both Republicans and Democrats in the past. He's pro-choice, pro-marriage equality and he believes in climate change. In 2008, he endorsed John McCain, but wished Obama the best after his victory. He's not a fundie, a teabagger, a birther or any other kind of RW nutjob. So why did he choose to make his GOP convention debut in support of a candidate who's hated by his own party, at a convention filled with lies and dog whistles, in a year in which the GOP has approved the most conservative (and extreme) platform in modern history? After all these years of being a sensible, straight-talker, Eastwood decided to put his name and reputation on the line for ... MITT ROMNEY??

It's either the saddest meltdown of an American icon or the best punk ever!

10. Remember Rove in 2008? He had the "real numbers" that showed McCain was going to win.

A lot of DUers were very nervous about an inside game that was going to defeat Obama.

Guess what? It was bullshit. Another example of an R thinking that if they say something long enough it will somehow come true.

BTW - if Rs were counting on voter suppression helping them win in Ohio and elsewhere, they just got their asses handed to them by the courts.

This time around, they're not just saying they're going to win - there's a blatant attempt to suppress the Democratic vote and they don't care who knows it. The courts are helping, so let's hope that continues. In any case ... it didn't discourage any of my family members from voting. In fact, it's made them more determined to defeat Romney.

I am starting to lean Rmoney got punked. Here is why. Clint Eastwood is an actor and a director. He flubbed his lines. A-list Actors don't flub like that. He was a mess. Again, how many A-list actors go on national stage looking like that? I can't recall any. I bet someone can though. Anyways, he would have rehearsed his speech for hours and wouldn't have flubbed that badly. He recently starred in a movie. So, he is probably still sharp. He acted like he wasn't I am leaning towards he was acting. If he had some kind of dementia it wouldn't be full blown like that, his recent movie indicates he was fine during filming. He might if he was having problems appear to be declining, but he wouldn't be in full bat shit crazy mode this close to making a major film.

4. That's another thing ... he's still working in major studio productions.

It's not like he's been reduced to low budget garbage or reality shows and needed the exposure. The man is still a major star. He didn't have to do it.

If he looked or behaved that way on a set, it would have been reported somewhere. So how did he go from "fully capable A-list actor/director" to "completely bat shit crazy" in such a short amount of time?

11. Simple: he's used to being on a set as an actor or director, so he has a level of comfort.

Clint was out of his element at the RNC. Worse, he probably had a feeling of comfort because he thought he was among like-minded people who dislike Obama as much as he does. He didn't stop to think that millions of people outside of that hall would be listening.

Don't give him too much credit. He simply let himself be put in a position where his true political nature came out, and it was an ugly thing to see.

if as OP says 'He's pro-choice, pro-marriage equality and he believes in climate change. In 2008, he endorsed John McCain, but wished Obama the best after his victory. He's not a fundie, a teabagger, a birther or any other kind of RW nutjob.'

He had an approved speech, and tossed it before he went on 'stage,' so mebbe it was too REAL pro-rmoney, he couldn't face going ahead with it, so did his 'best' ad-libbing with the silly chair. I'll take that thought to bed with me.

Thanks.

9. I love your idea but I don't think he would risk his reputation for Obama

Punking Romney by looking like a grumpy old man in front of the entire world--literally the entire world--wouldn't be as effective doing as a commercial for Obama, if he really was trying to deflate Romney. And looking like a fool in order to make the convention look ill-planned... that would require a mastery of ten-dimensional chess that even Obama couldn't match. It worked in terms of taking attention away from Romney's speech, but only in the sense of making the conversation all about how sad his appearance was. No lifelong movie star, who understandably cares more about his legacy than even ordinary people do (and we all do, to some extent), would make that choice.

You're right about how an A-list actor shouldn't have flubbed like that, and how he must still be compos mentis since he just starred in a movie. I also admit that in light of his recent Super Bowl commercial he would have seemed to be more of an Obama supporter than not, but I just don't see him choosing to punk Romney as a logical best choice for influencing the election. However, who knows--I'll feel pretty bad about my gloating over his epic faceplant if I'm wrong.

anti-Romney.

I'll Godwin this thread by saying that if I was a major actor back in Germany in the 1930s and I had the opportunity to get in a serious, ugly dig at Hitler even if it meant professional ruin or even my own death, I would hope that I would have the courage to do that.

It would even be worth it to keep Nixon, Reagan, or W out of office. So if it would be worth it for them, why not Romney, a man who represents the worst about modern politics in general and the modern republican party in particular?

And what better way to do it than by making them look like fools?

He got them to cheer against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I'll bet anyone $10,000 that he shows up in a few weeks tanned and rested and ready to talk about his new movie.

Why would he do that to himself intentionally?

But then again, he has a film coming out very shortly, in which he could demonstrate an entirely more competent side. If his new film is something on the level of Gran Torino, then that would throw some real doubt on the conventional wisdom that Eastwood was honestly trying to doing a straightforward favor for Romney.

The old man could be punking us all. Or not. I cannot wait to see the reviews.

13. The closest thing that I can think of from a major actor
Sun Sep 2, 2012, 02:36 AM
Sep 2012

is Tom Cruise jumping on the couch.

My mom's got a PhD in psychology and she has worked with psychotic and senile people. She said there's no way that he was senile. He rambled, yes, but he didn't say anything that wasn't a completely uncomfortable jab against the status quo. He concluded by saying nice things about democrats and libertarians!

Even if he had gotten up there and gone "Oh crap," he would have seen the light that told him his time was up and gotten the hell off the stage. As it was, it looked to me like he wanted to keep going, but after saying "Make my day" he decided to cut and run.

I think Eastwood is a man who does not give one single shit for the Teabaggers, and he just went out in a blaze of glory in the hopes that he could take the Romney campaign with him.
