The Myth of the Failed Impeachment Backlash

I keep seeing people say that if impeaching (or removing… people use the terms interchangeably though they don't mean the same thing) Donald Trump fails then he will be “unstoppable.” They cite experts and historians on this, though never by name. Probably because there is no evidence or precedent that this actually happens.

Let’s look at the three cases we have of presidential impeachment. Both Bill Clinton and Andrew Johnson were impeached by the House of Representatives, though not ultimately voted to be removed by the Senate. You could consider these the “failed” impeachments. We also have Richard Nixon, who resigned before he could be impeached and removed, which he almost certainly was going to be.

Clinton seems to be poster boy for this, so we’ll begin with him. Formal impeachment proceedings were launched against Clinton in 1998. Clinton was halfway through his second term, which he had won handily by 8.5 percentage points. His impeachment moved incredibly fast by government standards, and lasted only from October 1998 to January 1999. For comparison, the third season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 1998/1999 ran longer than Clinton’s impeachment hearings.

The impeachment had just started when the 1998 midterm elections were held. Whether they should count or not because of that is a personal opinion. For what it’s worth, this election was the first midterm since 1934 where the president’s party picked up seats in the House of Representatives (5), though Republicans retained control of both chambers.

I suspect that Congressional Democrats are still spooked by the aftermath of Tom De Lay’s attempt to impeach Bill Clinton and worry that they’ll lose seats the way Republicans did after Tom’s effort failed.

The difference is that this isn’t 1998. Donnie has been accused of doing far more serious stuff than lying about trysting with Monica Lewinsky. Also, Donnie lacks the Big Dog’s charm, and unlike 1998, Don’s charm is wearing off.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I remember that Bill Clinton was still popular enough to win a third presidential term, had that been constitutional.

Can Orange Julius say the same about a second term? I don’t think so.

Had we impeached before Ukraine it would of bit us in the ass. And Nancy knew that and would have held out to the election.

But this changed everything. An easy to understand Abuse of Power that can be explained in 3 sentences that all Americans can understand. And he admitted it. And to the detriment of our National Security to help him win an election.

Nancy saw that and jumped because there is no better politician in America than Speaker Pelosi. Ukraine changed my mind as well.

You know who else is a fantastic politician if also a complete evil asshole? McConnell. And notice he is not out front defending trump? He knows this is bad and likely to get worse. Not saying he will ever allow his caucus to support impeachment. And while giving the ‘correct’ statements is keeping his cards close to the vest.

I think he knew this was possible with trump from the git-go. He is focused on keeping the Senate. Nothing more.

The President is not a Democrat. A Democrat is not being impeached. So what the hell.
