What Will Republicans Do as the Evidence Grows?

They'll do what they always do. If Trump is no longer useful to them, they'll dump him like three day old pizza that has been forgotten and left on the counter. There is no loyalty there, because there are no principles among Republicans. It's all about how each of them can benefit from something.

Republicans will be OK with Trump going away. It's all an equation: "Does Trump Help Me? If Yes, then I support him. If No, then off with his head."

While the party might be willing and in some cases eager to throw him over, the base believes anything that Trump Tells them, and they won't be in favor of abandoning their beloved leader.

Both the elected officials and the citizens. They created a lie machine and it's taking us all down together. But they can't quit each other or the lie, because it's all they have left.

I think at least some of the "base" is sticking with him because they've been conditioned that way through Fox News - if common sense there can move beyond Shep Smith, Chris Wallace and Andrew Napolitano, it could cause more than few leaks in the dam.

We cannot do anything about this other than to proceed with integrity. But we also can keep our own morale high and an eye on our hopes and dreams.

What bothers me, from what I see here at DU, is our own gloom and doom and negativity. Why not stay positive?

I get push back for advocating high morale. Who benefits from gloom and doom?

Nixon escaped prosecution for his crimes.

Reagan skated on Iran-Contra. So did Bush, Sr.

W and Cheney skated on their ginned-up Iraq war lies and crimes.

Trump has gotten away with the worst violations in our country's history! Mueller's report makes it clear that Trump obstructed justice. But he got away with that.

With that history of Republican criminality, why would a rational, sane person expect a different outcome? That would be kind of a definition of insanity, wouldn't it?

I expect the worst but I'll be pleasantly surprised if Trump goes down ignobly.

They're going to risk their political futures and spend $1 billion+ trying to get this buffoon re-elected?

They're ruthless but they're not stupid.

only so many times. It really comes down to what you suggest: Is there anything more they can possibly get out of Trump? They've got their tax cuts, their judges, they've deregulated so deeply that even corporations are telling them to back off. The things he's failed to do--infrastructure, middle class tax cuts--they oppose. So what more is there? He's damaged goods at this point.
