"Are you REALLY that stupid or do you just think I am?" It helps to look them straight in the eye and have a slight smile on your face as you ask this.
It also helps to have the FACTS to rebut their nonsense. It will have no effect at all on the Trumpie, but may educate some listeners.

No need to say another word. Not one.
Though the middle finger salute is optional.

I understand the appeal. Believe me. I sometimes fantasize about saying this, then don't.
When this has mostly passed and they're doing their best to forget and to believe they never were that stupid, best to make sure they'll be able to.

(1,977 posts)You mean it's important for you to maintain people that support a traitor who locks babies in cages, destroys our environment by making it easier for corporations to pollute all because he's pissed that a black man was President?
Yeah. No. Fuck those people. I don't want my kids around that. I don't want to pretend I'm "good" with those people. And at this point I don't give any fucks at all if they happen to be family members.

(58,785 posts)Nowhere. They're Americans, half of all of us. You'll be surrounded by, working and living among conservatives for the rest of your life.
If you want a return to stability and decency, you'd damn well better be part of what you claim you want. Not be a permanent part of the problem, with behavior merely a mirror image of what is loudly deplored.
Good and bad are not just labels we can slap on our and their foreheads.

(1,977 posts)Like I said I have zero fucks in maintaining a relationship with people that support locking up children and destroying our planet. I'm not going to engage in niceties with people like that. And yes I can slap those labels on people that support that. I've have zero problems with that.
They are bad people. There's no discussion about it for me. You do you.

(58,785 posts)people our nation needs to be healthy and prosperous again, or part of the problem. Don't imagine for a moment that RW problem people don't sincerely believe you are a bad person and insist they'll never be nice to you. And meaning it.

We no longer "gather" with the few family members who support Trump. We nod at them at funerals and leave it at that.
I would not knowingly accept an invitation from a deplorable.
In my community, more than 3 out of every 4 people voted for Trump and we seldom pass a week without one of them shouting obscenities at our bumper stickers or flopping us off at a stoplight. i.e., they are ALREADY resentful and often vengeful.
I will not repeat the entire phrase that summarizes my attitude with respect to these people, but it ends with "---and the mule they rode in on."

Its my signature line and sole response to much of their nonsense. They really dont understand facts, logic or reason and trying to make them is a waste of breath.

(9,481 posts)The trick is determining if they are ignorant or dishonest.
In my experience, when dealing with most "card-carrying" Republicans it's the latter. With these people, your goal is not to necessarily persuade them but make them look like morons to anyone else that may be part of the conversation. I generally only engage these Republicans if I feel they are misleading others in a group. Otherwise, I don't want to waste my time with them because even if you nail them on the facts, they will change the subject (Ie. What about....).
You run into the ignorant more when you deal with the independent or people who don't really follow politics and are only going by the noise the Republican media makes. These are the people we need to engage and sway to our side.
