They better watch their use of that term, (even though it is inappropriate) it has more than one meaning, in its short form without the full length coup d'état, (which applies to the sudden, military takeover of a country):

"a highly successful, unexpected stroke, act, or move; a clever action or accomplishment."

They are not the same. The word is being misused and that is both erroneous and dangerous.
