David Delgado, of Winnetka, was arrested Tuesday by the Hermosa Beach Police Department in Los Angeles County.
Authorities said the incident occurred on September 2, when Delgado and the other man were in a bathroom of a Hermosa Beach restaurant.
Delgado noticed the hat and purportedly asked the man what the Russian lettering meant. When the unidentified individual told him the hat said, "Make America Great Again," Delgado then repeatedly punched him until he fell to the ground, Sgt. Robert Higgins said.
Delgado then stole the hat and fled, Higgins added.
Law enforcement said they were able to identify Delgado through security footage. He is currently being held on $100,000 bond.

ON EDIT: I posted this because I thought a Trumper attacked someone making fun of Trump by suggesting he's a Russian asset. Am I wrong?

(28,979 posts)Calling him a Russian asset. Maybe I was wrong. If so, the guy punching him may have mistaken his intent too? Now I am confused.

(31,261 posts)The cap wearer was a crude asshole, but he was not violating any laws or immediately trying to harm anyone (though his message has harmed plenty).

(31,261 posts)Even if, as you claimed, all facts maybe were not known. There is no reason to treat this situation any different.
I live in Florida in a red county. I don't wear clothing or have stickers on my car that could provoke MAGATS.

(12,712 posts)That's what I thought right off the bat!
Wouldn't having the phrase in Russian be a parody alluding to Putin/Trump?

(28,979 posts)It reminds me of a story my dad always told about the Hoover/Roosevelt election. He was out carousing in Newark after the election, and a gang of men asked him who he voted for. He said, "Roosevelt, of course." The men, all Republicans, beat him up. Later, he met another gang of men who asked who he voted for. He said "Hoover," so he wouldn't "get beaten to a pulp," and he got beat up again because they were for Roosevelt. He loved telling this story.
I always thought that politics sounded pretty brutal back then. Now, however, I can see how it happens. More than once my fists have itched to punch a Republican in the last few years!

(31,261 posts)fascination these days. Plus, if I punch someone, even someone that is a loathsome asshole, while not defending my life, and that person ends up dead, I would never forgive myself. People are fragile in many ways, better to not react and move on.

(18,774 posts)Was doing so sarcastically and the assailant was an offended Trump supporter.
Do you still say "Choices have consequences too... Lucky he just got his ass beat and the hat taken"

(35,359 posts)A lot of people seem to be saying the morality and therefore presumed legality of hitting a stranger in public because of something he's wearing depends on whether they're on our team or the opposite team.
Not that it's wrong to go up and batter a stranger based on possibly offensive speech that, in fact, was harmless until it was translated and interpreted.
I can only imagine the parallel conversation on other websites and how we'd react--"It's okay to beat up a lib because, well, he's a lib and doesn't really deserve the same rights *real* people do" wouldn't be met with discussion as to whether the stimulus was misinterpreted or not.

(12,712 posts)I would like to compare my interpretation:
The guy wearing the hat was wearing it as a parody/protest. Yes?
The guy who asked him what it meant was angry once he found that out and acted out violently, attacking the man and stealing the hat.
My conclusion, the perpetrator was a Trump supporter who resented the Trump/Putin allusion.

(2,228 posts)The guy wearing the Russian Maga hat maybe was making fun of Russia & Trump. I could be wrong and he could be a magat who supports Russia and Trump
The man who attacked the Russian Maga hat guy probably attacked him because he thought he was a Trump supporter anyway
