By all appearances, the Presidents brazen and unprecedented appeal to China and to Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden is wrong and appalling.

When the only American citizen President Trump singles out for Chinas investigation is his political opponent in the midst of the Democratic nomination process, it strains credulity to suggest that it is anything other than politically motivated.

(1,604 posts)The Mormons vote Republican, but the immigration camps have a lot of more urban Mormons very rattled. I am inclined to see this as a weather balloon that Romney is using to get a feel about whether there's enough support at home for impeachment. He would be the logical rally point person for an anti-Trump faction in the Senate.
I think that you're going to see more Republicans in the Senate (and the House for that matter) break when it comes time to vote. I think getting to 67 is pretty much off the table, but getting a majority of 51 Senators voting to remove sends its own message.

(2,002 posts)Romeny and others will announce their intent to seek the GOP nomination for 2020. Whether that is because Trump has resigned, I don't know. But running him in 2020 is untenable at this point(and they know it even if they wont admit it yet). I think the "behind the scenes" GOP money men are just waiting for Trump's complete crash&burn which can't be that far away given the events of this week and his continued "doubling down" on lawlessness.

(15,412 posts)I'm no Romney fan but I live in Utah and he's not so bad. He did pull our Olympics out of the fire and his stand on health care for all is not reactionary like the rest of his party. Trump is not popular here, Mormons hold him accountable for his moral failings, unlike evangelicals. I'd take him over Mike Lee any day. (I know, not saying much.)
I don't know how popular Mitt is in DC but Trump may know better than to go after him. If he can withstand it, others may follow?

(2,002 posts)Who made this statement about "strains credulity" to suggest its not politically motivated. That completely derails the "he's just investigating corruption, what's wrong about that?" talking point that many GOPers seemed to have received in the last 24hrs and were going to go with it as a deflection. I mean, we all know its nonsense, but for Romney to go out early and "call bs" on it is perfect. Its like he just told the rest of the party "don't even think about going to stupid land defending this".

(14,176 posts)Former presidential candidate Mitt Romney praised President-elect Donald Trump after the two men went to dinner as Trump continues to deliberate about his choice for secretary of State. I had a wonderful evening with President-elect Trump, Romney said after leaving the dinner. We had another discussion about affairs throughout the world and these discussions Ive had with him have been enlightening, and interesting, and engaging. Ive enjoyed them very, very much. I was also very impressed by the remarks he made on his victory night. By the way, its not easy winning. I know that myself. He did something I tried to do and was unsuccessful in. He won the general election and he continues with a message of inclusion and bringing people together and his vision is something which obviously connected with the American people in a very powerful way. The last few weeks he's been carrying or a transition effort and I can tell you Ive been impressed by what I've seen in the transition effort.
I want a scorched earth policy. These rats leaving the ship that turn a 180 as soon as there is nothing in it for them. I can hardly wait for Lindsay Graham's tearful speech, flipping back 180..from his last 180 flip...and making excuses how he was so duped.

(28,504 posts)I only remembered his speech shortly before the Republican convention in 2016, urging the party to reject Trump as a candidate. This is a good addendum to know - and probably missed because of the shock and awe news cycle and Trump's heinous actions every day since he was elected.

Disgusting worms, although I am really glad to see this as the inquiry now has bipartisan support. That will be big plus points with independents and security minded repugs (I know that's funny, but maybe a few will act responsibly on something this big).
On 2nd read - yeah I have a hard time believing more than 1 -2 repugs will vote to remove the criminal grifter and person who puts our national interests as risk for his own and probably PUtin's profit.
