Adam Schiff: "It comes down to this"

Quote of the Day

“It comes down to this. We’ve cut through the denials. The deflections. The nonsense. Donald Trump believes he can pressure a foreign nation to help him politically. It’s his ‘right.’ Every Republican in Congress has to decide: Is he right?”

— House Intelligence Committee chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA), on Twitter.

This is simple.

It’s not about the whistleblower or the complaint.

It’s not about Democrats. Or me.

It’s about a damning call in which the President pressured a foreign power to investigate a political rival, harming national security.

It’s about our democracy.

They don't get to decide if he's right. The law gets to decide that.

What they have to decide is whether they support and defend the Constitution or not.

the Democrats in the House. Yesterday he proved he can say or do anything and there is nothing anyone can do about it. The House can vote to impeach him and he knows the Senate will still support him. The only way to get him out of office is to win the election. I fear as long as the economy holds up he will probably win. That will be the end of our democracy.

trump can say anything he likes. It's his constitutionally protected right. However, the consequences of his exercising his free speech right, especially in violation of his oath of office, are up to Congress, and should include being removed from office.

Likewise, you cannot compel a witness to speak, nor compel them to produce documents. Cannot be done. You can create nasty consequences for both, but that choice is up to the witness. In this climate, it's as likely that a court of trump toadies will intervene to forestall contempt charges for noncompliant witnesses. I expect nothing less.

I sincerely hope Congress uses all the tools in the toolbox to scare enough of them into testifying. Maybe a few of them in jail, if this could even be enforced by a Justice Department wholly owned by trump, would bring them around.

I also don't expect trump to leave office voluntarily--ever. To remove him will require the full force and power of Congress and the Secret Service. Maybe not even then, if the SCOTUS demurs.

they will be destroyed by the right wing media. The AG will cover his ass no matter what. The SCOTUS is going to back him no matter what. I agree he won't leave voluntarally either. It may actually take a civil war to get the country back.
