Trying to take a temporary break from all the news for a bit. I was doing some laundry today and as the front loading washer was spin drying I watched in interest as the water was pushed forward to the window and dropped out as it spun. I remember my mom having one of those wringer washers where after the wash there were a couple rollers on top the machine that pressed the water out (dont remember what happened to the water). Made me think of how much things have changed and thought Id bring up a few:
Party lines; there were several of our neighbors on our line too. Also had to use the operator to make long distance calls.
Bias tires. Before radials the old tires were always getting flats, rides were much tougher, and recaps were common. Tires didnt last long and nether did cars; 100,000 miles on a car seemed to be exceptional and many items of maintenance are long gone.
B&W TV. We didnt have color till I was a teen.
Road side rests; before the interstates there were lots of road side rests with picnic tables. If you were lucky there was at least an out house, otherwise paths out into the weeds.
Burner barrels out back where you burned your flammable garbage. Of course we produced a fraction of the garbage of today.
S&H green stamps and similar
Ashtrays and smoking everywhere, cigarette machines, I think they were 25 or maybe 50 cents.
Deadly playground equipment
Bomb shelters and school drills where youd hide under your desk and then file down to the basement where theyd have those barrels marked with a circle/triangle full of emergency supplies.
I was just thinking of physical items, society has changed at least as much.

He's always been that way-- taking idiotic risks. God must smile on fools, however... he's still around!

(25,941 posts)Speaking of smoking...I remember smoking on commercial flights - ashtrays built in to the armrests between seats.

(10,207 posts)Ive been here awhile, longer than my profile says because I joined a few different times. I only really got real active since I retired this year. Now I tend to spend a lot of time here but still havent figured things out. I just checked and Im up to 700 and some posts. I had to kind of laugh. In one of my earliest posts I got into it a little with someone. I checked and he had 10,000+ posts and I jumped on him about being a know it all. Now I realize they pile up pretty fast if you check in most days like Ive been doing lately.

(62,422 posts)the lounge will come up.
Just like any other discussion group just click on the 'start a discussion' button like you did in GD to post it to begin with.
You may want to open a second window to do this so you can do a simple copy and paste.
I always end my day in the Lounge to relax. I'll look for it tomorrow.

(10,207 posts)I was hoping there would be a trick to do it with a couple commands. My computer got hacked a couple months ago so until I can replace it Im doing everything with my phone. Things like copy/paste are pretty challenging. But Ive never really checked out the lounge and next time I come up with some post like that sounds like a good place. Thanks for the pointers.

(6,593 posts)And if we got hurt as a result of 'skitching' on somebody's back bumper in the winter, our folks gave us a whooping - instead of suing the owner of the car.
So much has changed... thanks for the memories!

(66,381 posts)The cathode ray tube image started as a little white dot that grew into the full picture within a few seconds.
The image would do the reverse when you turned the set off.
I'll never forget when we got a solid-state Tv in 1976, I was overjoyed by the instant-on feature of the image.

(14,118 posts)Then in 1980 my next door neighbor was a single Mom who used a wringer washer because it was cheap. When wringing out clothes the water dripped back into the tub of the washer where it could be re-used if desired. Otherwise the water in the tub could be drained if you wanted that, too. Those were the days!
