On Thursday, a theater in Huntington Beach showing Joaquin Phoenixs Joker was temporarily closed after a credible threat was reported to the police.
In the weeks ahead of Warner Bros. releasing Joker, moviegoers have expressed concern about potential threats from troubled individuals who could be inspired by the Joaquin Phoenix film to commit acts of violence. On Wednesday, the Hunting Beach Police Department received information about a possible threat concerning the opening of Joaquin Phoenixs Joker at the Century Theater in Huntington Beach, California.
Authorities deemed the threat credible enough to provide a uniformed police presence to the theater and close venue on Thursday night out of an abundance of caution, according to the Hunting Beach Police Department. The Century Theater canceled the final two screenings of Joaquin Phoenixs Joker.
Following an investigation, police concluded the theater could reopen and resume operations on Friday, with the first showing for Joaquin Phoenixs Joker on that day having been listed for 10:10 a.m. For the remainder of the opening weekend, the Huntington Beach Police Department will provide patrols at Century Theater.

(25,183 posts)I almost went to the movie this last evening, but decided to postpone out of nothing more than laziness.

(102,292 posts)It just brings up the horror of that night for everyone, including the wider community of which I am one.
I don't know what the answer is. People ought to be able to see this and any other movie. But, they are DAMNED right to take it seriously.

(9,114 posts)they had some photos of themselves with the Joker makeup thing, for some reason.
There was some stupid claim that Heath Ledger was disturbed by his immersion in the Joker character in that Dark Night movie. He was great, the movie was B grade. He had done a lot of filming on Terry Gilliam's movie though, which featured a lynching on Blackfriars bridge, like happened to god's banker Roberto Calvi.
Also, when Gilliam's Fisher King was released, immediately a wacko shot up Luby's restaurant in Texas, killing 23, wounding 27. There were attempts to claim the movie influenced the dead shooter.
Don't know what to make of this joker stuff. Juggalos? Woods clown second amendment people? Hutaree militia?

The Aurora tragedy was not about a movie, it was about a deranged individual who should have been institutionalized. Would it have been any less traumatic for the survivors had this asshat shot up a rom-com?

(102,292 posts)Law enforcement and that theater determined the threat was real and chose to cancel the showing. To suggest doing otherwise is a callous level of disregard that I can not and will not enable.

(25,183 posts)was quietly provide the security, and not have the news media make a big splash about it that just serves as advertisement for the movie. Is that a middle ground that we can agree on?

It is a fine line, but caution dictates doing the right thing.

I can well imagine why the action was taken. In a country with as many guns in private hands as ours, I would think twice, too, about being in a place where just anyone could see that film. Even normal people with no mental issues at all might feel a little shaken after seeing that film.

(29,322 posts)And believe the film plays on the myth that mentally ill are inherently dangerous so I won't be watching
Plus these days I'm rarely affected by movie or TV as I focus too much on the production such as the actor's eyes avoiding the camera or get stuck inside the mind of the writer or creature when it comes to specific lines. It is hard to explain but I usually more distracted when I watch something.

(54,405 posts)It basically shows one fragile mans descent into madness, brought on by a long series of unfortunate personal mishaps, and intensified by a large dose of dark cinematography. It tells a story, but one that could resonate the wrong way with the wrong person. The film itself was well-made, but is intensely somber.

(29,322 posts)I may check it out. The reviews were describing the Joker character as mentally ill and was turned off.
I do see there are some incel problems so I can see where someone may get the wrong messages.
