I don't know that this was all that much of a stretch, given that anything that touches Ukraine is "Ukrainian" these days, just like anything that's passed through Russia is "Russian." I'd be more likely to describe him as "Russian" than Ukrainian, and Ukrainian rather than Kazakh. Esp. since he was based in L'viv.

I mean, there's a rich American who immigrated from Russia over 35 years ago, and every time he's mentioned he's "Russian." Sort of shorthand for "enemy of the American people," that's what that's become.
