In the report I read, Johnson said that after he heard a rumor about it, he called Trump on the phone to ask about it, and that Trump flatly denied it, which (in Johnson's mind) shows that it isn't true.

In other words, Johnson said that he heard the rumor but then determined that it's false.

Publicly his apparent stance is that, if trump said it, then it must be true.
