This 18-Year-Old Mass Shooting Survivor Is Running For Office -- And Someone Just Tried To Stab Him

This young man is a hero.

The 18-year-old gun violence prevention activist is running for city council in Houston, but he turned up late to a political breakfast, where he served biscuits to black seniors and asked for their vote.
<snip>

On his way home, he pulled into a Starbucks on Memorial Drive for an iced latte, when he heard shouts for help. When he came to assist, a man who had just stolen beer from the gas station next door lunged at him with a knife, just inches from his face. The man continued to swing the knife at McClinton, while the teen called 911. He then helped chase the thief into bushes across the road to keep him away from confused onlookers who didn’t seem to grasp that the man had a weapon.

“I didn’t want him to go on a cutting spree,” said McClinton. “And if he had a gun, we’d be dead.”

Guns are something McClinton thinks about a lot. After surviving a mass shooting near his church in May 2016, he helped to organize the March for Our Lives Houston rally, where 15,000 people turned out in Texas to protest gun violence. - BuzzFeed

I hope he wins his council seat. He deserves it, not just for this incident, but for his courage and his intelligence about violence.

With our lowlife president and his cronies dominating the news, reading this post gave me hope for our future. I wish McClinton every success in his run for city council.

A culmination of poverty with no way out, un-treated illnesses (no health care or addiction/ mental health treatment for millions), paranoia, propaganda (fueling the paranoia), massive amounts of easily-obtainable weaponry, hopelessness and rage against those perceived as assailants in any form or context. And the belief that you can do whatever you want, cuz you're in the US of A, and laws are for suckers.

13. Almost everyone on city level here runs as "nonpartisan"

Not exactly sure why that is, but has been the case as long as I’ve lived here.

Even so, everyone “knows” which party they are affiliated.

Mayor Annise Parker ran nonpartisan, but everyone knows she’s one of us through and through.. first openly lesbian mayor.

Current Mayor Turner likewise runs as “nonpartisan” yet everyone knows/considers him to be Democrat Party selection.

Mayor Turner’s chief rival this election.. “Nonpartisan”, yet everyone knows he’s a Cheeto supporter and donor and is the “Republican”.

It was Beto who encouraged him to run for something. The position he's running for is occupied by a former bail bondsman.
