I did an internet search regarding chatter about Trump resigning and there are many that think he just might do that.
The chatter is that it will be very abrupt and he will do it before the impeachment vote.
Heck, I even saw an astrologer post they had "done" his chart and saw he would resign, and that was before the impeachment hearings started.

(115,735 posts)I don't think he'd do it unless he could figure out a way to make it look like he'd "won" in some way, like if he said he was resigning because he could only defeat the Deep State as a fearless leader leading a revolution from outside the government.

(18,634 posts)and so far it looks like they will.
If not he'll probably demand the Supreme Court throw out the votes.
(I know SCOTUS has no power to do so but Trump doesn't know that.

(102,292 posts)they might go along with a vote to advance articles of impeachment, given it would already be a done deal with Dem votes. Seeing that could really drive Trump over the edge.
British and some US media have also been reporting on his deterioration--both with balance and speaking. Trump had a visit to Walter Reed this week that I saw no reporting on--very quick in and out with no media. Given the official excuse was to visit veterans and no photos were taken, some have wondered if he did not go for an MRI. So, if there is a confirmation of advancing dementia or similar, one might just wonder if he wouldn't find a way to blame everyone but himself for "forcing him" and leave to cover his impending decompensation.
That said, Trump is anything but "normal." Health or dementia issues aside, he's been a textbook malignant narcissist his whole live. The only thing for certain is that the only one he will consider is HIMSELF and he is fully prepared to take each and all of us down with him.

(9,094 posts)He will also believe he will have succeeded at damaging Biden, whether or not Biden wins the nomination.
He will also believe that he has done nothing but been smart in manipulating the system, the media, the people, political rivals, and world leaders.
It's a game to him and he believes he always wins. He will listen to his sycophantic circle and Sean Hannity.
Also, his lawyers may have told him, he could be prosecuted after leaving office. So no, he won't EVER resign.

(54,405 posts)However, he will not lose the trial in the Senate. There are not 20 Republicans in the Senate that will vote against him. He could declare the USA to be a province of Russia, make Russian the official language of the country, and order a life-size replica of St. Basil's cathedral built on the mall next to the Washington Monument, and there would STILL not be 20 Republican Senators who would vote against him in an impeachment trial.

If he did, who would the gop run in 2020? Might they not put up a candidate?

(2,097 posts)The only thing stopping NY state from charging him is the fact that he currently occupies the White House. Once he's out, he's an ordinary citizen and he's fair game. I'm sure that he'd love to live in NY again, but not at Rikers.

He cant leave now. Melina was crying when he won for a reason.

(25,862 posts)He's a narcissist. No one else is real to him. In his mind he's always the smartest person in the room, and always right. He is not capable of anything else.
Notice the way he denies having said or done things he's said and done.

He'll have to be carried out of the White House like Julian Assange. He'll kick and scream, his phone in hand twittering like a madman.
And I, for one, will record it and watch it over and over and over.

(18,125 posts)A former Trump Organization executive says she thinks President Donald Trump may resign rather than face possible removal from office by impeachment.
"He does a lot of things to save face," Barbara Res, a former Trump Organization vice president, told CNN's Brian Stelter on Reliable Sources Sunday.
"It would be very, very, very bad for him to be impeached," Res said. "I don't know that he'll be found guilty but I don't know that he wants to be impeached. I think that's what this panic is about. And my gut [instinct] is that he'll leave office, he'll resign. Or make some kind of a deal, even, depending on what comes out."

Personally, I don't think he'll resign. That's not his style.

(6,395 posts)Does he want the Senate to take this up for vote? If it helps them, yes. If it doesn't, then no. If it doesn't do either....who knows.
If it doesn't help retain the Senate, then Mitch will lie to Trump and tell him that the Senate will convict and he should get the hell out.
And I have to think there has to be a lot going on behind the scenes. Pence pardons Trump, he's a political dead man....but then, he probably couldn't win the Presidency anyway. Behind the scenes, I have to think Jeb, Romney and Kaisich are already talking to donors, strategists, etc. Or, perhaps even talking to Pence to be his VP should he take control. Then again, they may also consider 2020 lost, and are just angling for 2024.
One thing I think I'm completely right on, Mitch doesn't want the impeachment come to the Senate. He's already painting himself as fighting it...despite their own Memo telling them they can't.
Another landmine, a recession is coming. We get a Democratic President and largely Congress, the GOP is going to use this as a club and use it often against Democrats. I can see it now..."Trump was presiding over a great economy and the Democrats forced him out, now we have a recession". If Trump stays, its going to fall squarely on the GOP....and then the Senate for sure is in danger.
Should Trump leave, they will "marry" themselves to Trump once he's out to regain the base, while privately breathing a sigh of relief. They'll also amend their selection system quietly to make sure this doesn't happen again.

He has reason to think his "deal making" can continue to make his boss money while preserving the Republican Party's pretense of legitimacy.
Either way, works for me.
Then the House can get on with Pence and the rest.

(146,317 posts)If he does, it will be abruptly announced and he will say something like "See how you like it when I'm gone!"
Trump acts impulsively, because he is completely unable to plan actions logically. He cannot look at a list of options and then choose the one that will have the best outcome. He is simply incapable of that.
So, when he is finally backed into a corner from which he sees no possible escape, he's likely to simply throw in the towel and walk away. It's like filing bankruptcy on a casino that is bleeding money. It's cutting one's losses when there is no hope for recovery.
Donald Trump does not act like most people act, because he is incapable of thoughtful planning. He simply reacts. There is nothing about a resignation that he could not rationalize. He is an incompetent person, entirely.
