(205,470 posts)LBJ knew of Nixon's corruption, thwarted the peace talks while LBJ was still in office, but was persuaded not to make it public in the interest of national security. Then Nixon won - and then came Watergate! Reminds me of another Republican candidate in 1980...

(2,771 posts)And that 1980 intrigue was followed by Iran-Contra, which should have blown up like Watergate. But enter Bill Barr in 1992 to finish its coverup/cleanup. The thing that strikes my Democratic heart is the repetitive Republican criminality. Its so ingrained in our national life that the MSM and the average Joe cant be bothered opposing it any longer.

(205,470 posts)And they said that the Nixon people tried to find the information - only to be caught orchestrating similar dirty tricks that resulted in Watergate. Of course, Jimmy Carter said in his autobiography something like "we'll never know" why the hostages weren't released until he had left office. Well, I certainly know and anyone who was paying attention does too. President Carter tries to think the best of everyone, could be why he's still in good health and spirits at 95...

(3,728 posts)right up to the last minute of the Reagan inauguration. Even though he knew damn well how it would be perceived and how it would make him look, i.e. Reagan suddenly worked his magic and got the hostages freed where Carter couldn't.
And yet, still graceful about it after all these years.

(4,544 posts)and said it was really good. I will watch it, too, as soon as I can. Thanks for the glowing review! I'm looking forward to it. (Being "in class" with Prof. Maddow is always fun and interesting! She is a great teacher.)

(205,470 posts)I remember President Johnson, but that's about it - but he was a complex and fascinating character, it was interesting to learn more about him and painful to learn even more about what he went through. I looked him up and realized that he didn't live long enough to learn about Nixon's fall and resignation. And you're right, Rachel is the perfect teacher, I was absorbed through the whole thing, definitely worth watching. And I couldn't help thinking of what happened with Jimmy Carter, who I know much more about - that Reagan somehow arranged for the hostages to be released after Carter left office, similar Republican dirty tricks.
BTW, we miss you these days - hoping you'll be able to join us next time around!

(13,912 posts)I read about this previously but Rachel put it into context in her perfect way... Like Colbert said on his show, She lays out the parts, tells you what each part does/did and then puts it together and shows how it worked...... Brilliant!.. She makes complicated political stuff easy to understand for even my simple brain
Nixon, like tRump was/is the head of a crime organization that would do anything to get to their objective...... legal or not...
