Along with the loyalty, and his reality TV show, he has also inserted himself into the culture as an icon all these years. As we see, it is a really huge con game and he has been playing a character that is obviously a facade and even quite contrary to what is under the mask.

I think that plays into it for loyalists, who not only have frequent references to him in their noggins but believe in what is presented to them without challenging the validity. It seems there was more to Trump winning than we might have realized and it just slipped by as a line or a joke.

They will defend based on confirmation bias alone, you can count on that to the very end.

We need to be reminded of the loftier aspirations of our republic when we are daily saturated with outrage. If not, then the outrage becomes our speaking point.
