Trump pulls United States out of military treaty that allows surveillance of Russia: report

On Monday, the Trump administration announced the United States would be withdrawing from the Treaty on Open Skies, an agreement between 34 nations that allows unarmed military aircraft to fly over each other’s territory for observation purposes.

One of the key benefits to the treaty is that it allows the United States and its allies to fly over Russian airspace for the purpose of gathering intelligence — 42 overflights of Russian territory per year are permitted under the treaty, including 16 overflights by the United States specifically. These flyovers were important to monitoring Russia as they invaded and occupied the Crimean Peninsula.

No, wishful thinking.

But it'll be fun watching him crash after a lifetime of coke and stimulants and depressants. After a lifetime of a "high" life and the guy in the bunk next to him doesn't even want to give a shit.

Please, let this be on T.V. Just like the last days of Saddam.

We can fly over Russia and observe and they can fly over us. This ends that.

Of course, this also poses some other problems. What about Crimea? Or occupied Georgia?

Also the whole point of this treaty was to watch each others troop deployments. Obviously our deployments are a bit public. Not so much in Russia. Is Putin planning more deployments? Such as near Ukraine? Or somewhere else we don't expect, don't think he'll go after the Baltics....controlling regions that resented Moscow's rule helped bring down the USSR. But are there other areas we don't see on the radar?

I wonder if the Russians are subject to the same no fly zones that US pilots are?

While I haven't flown in over 20 years now and long before 9/11, even back then there were plenty of places that would get you into a whole heap of trouble if you flew over.

But the catch is the restrictions are in the details. The flights are scheduled, the routes preapproved, and the sensor suite is nothing special as it all has to be approved and available to all signatories. Resolution on the cameras is limited by treaty. Observers from the country being flown over also ride along on the flight.

From an intelligence viewpoint, these flights provide very little for the reasons listed above. It's more of a friendly gesture then an actual intelligence asset.

satellite imagery is great but doesn't show everything. Flyovers are more targeted by location and have different types of sensors. It's mostly a gesture of goodwill through transparency.

Doesn’t withdrawing mean other country’s militaries can’t overflight America? That could be pretty convenient in some situations.

I worry about that as much as other countries using this as a reason to also withdraw.

As long as NATO remains intact and our allies share intelligence and they keep overflight rights losing our overflight doesn’t matter so much.

Us being blind or more invisible worries me.
