World's richest woman says poor should have less fun, work harder

By David Lazarus

August 30, 2012, 9:31 a.m.

Just in case you were beginning to think rich people were deeply misunderstood and that they feel the pain of those who are less fortunate, here's the world's wealthiest woman, Australian mining tycoon Gina Rinehart, with some helpful advice.

"If you're jealous of those with more money, don't just sit there and complain," she said in a magazine piece. "Do something to make more money yourself -- spend less time drinking or smoking and socialising, and more time working."

Yeah, let them eat cake.

Rinehart made her money the old-fashioned way: She inherited it. Her family iron ore prospecting fortune of $30.1 billion makes her Australia's wealthiest person and the richest woman on the planet.

snip//

Why are people poor? Rinehart blamed what she described as "socialist," anti-business government policies, and urged Australian officials to lower the minimum wage and cut taxes.

"The millionaires and billionaires who choose to invest in Australia are actually those who most help the poor and our young," she said. "This secret needs to be spread widely."

And now it's out there.

Thank you, rich people. We're not worthy.

As time goes by, I see less and less difference between the two. We can still keep a few tycoons as amusing figureheads, but they will have no power. Sort of like The Donald.

the private boxes at the opera for the old aristocracy, and today's sports arena sky boxes?

After the old royalty and robber barons fell out of favor ca. WWI, for decades everybody pretty much sat together for entertainment events. Sure, there were better seats for slightly higher prices, but by and large everybody sat on the same level and in pretty much the same kinds of seats.

That was a great indicator of the strength of the middle class, and less an era of exclusivity, epecially during the period between FDR and LBJ.

Notice how that all changed with Ray-gun and the rebirth of wealth-worship and royalty-worship in the 1980's. Older but cozy stadiums were razed and replaced with "modern" buildings with exclusive executive skyboxes that ordinary people could never afford - - and that was exactly the purpose: the filthy rich no longer had to rub elbows with the riff-raff.

See Citizens United, for example.

They were curbed in the 20s/30s but who is going to curb them now?

... if you lower the minimum wage, those poor people will already have to work more hours, and spend less time doing anything else, to make the same amount. They won't get more from working more. Your argument is nonsense.

Perhaps you're just a vile, self-serving, greedy individual who will never be satisfied no matter how much money you own, and don't give a damn about anybody who didn't have your extreme good luck.

Sometimes we didn't have money for the electricity bill oh my goodness camping out in your living room in the dark its fun

Whenever we got sick my mother would always say give it a week to see if it went away because we could not afford the doctor bills, being sick for weeks was fun

my mother work third shift and then she would go clean houses during the day and we had so much fun

my mother never took vacation on holidays she always volunteer to work because of the overtime pay and that was fine too

everyone should want to be poor it is a laugh a minute

the best part about being poor is wearing clothes that are too small for you and shoes with holes in the soles

but hands down the best part of being poor ever is mayonnaise and ketchup' sandwiches

I wish this heffer could have been in our house with the rats or so big they used to read us a story and put us to bed at night.

oh yes we poor people had nothing but fun 24 hours a day! I can't believe more people don't want to be poor it is so sofa king fun

I know it is a laugh riot every day at my house. I can't believe the shit these people say. If they think those of us worth less than a few million are having such a grand time, maybe they should try it for a quarter or two to see what fun they've been missing.

I know poor people and a lot of them work and work hard, harder than I've ever worked. There are tons of very difficult labor-intensive jobs that don't pay enough to keep you from needing government assistance. This is not a problem of people unwilling to work; it's a problem of jobs being underpaid. *

* I don't live in Australia but this is a worldwide issue. The people who have the most physically demanding jobs - very hard workers - often get paid the least.

Sun Sep 2, 2012, 07:22 PM

Yes, they were legally wedded. They were very poor and had 7 kids (very religous). The husband worked a full time job as a janitor and had another part-time job on weekends. The wife also had a full time job. Her teenage daughter took care of the younger siblings after school while Mom worked. I won't get into what this teenager thought of Mom and Dad having that big a family.

Despite 3 jobs, they lived in Section 8 housing, got food stamps, free school lunches, etc., because they did not make enough money to support a family of NINE.

I suppose the Republicans would say that the TEENAGER should have been working too (mopping school floors?), but then how would they have been able to afford DAY CARE for their young kids?

Republicans are totally cluess what the lives of the poor, and especially WORKING POOR, are really like.
