People close to the president fear the impeachment inquiry will hurt his 2020 reelection prospects and say his comparisons to Russia are falling short.
High-level Trump supporters who have stood by the president for years are growing increasingly unsettled by his latest strategy of dismissing the latest fight as Russia 2.0. Half-a-dozen senior Republicans, including those who both talk directly to Trump and advise him on everything from campaign strategy to policy, communications and fundraising, said in interviews that they fear the president's plan to tie Russia and Ukraine could be ineffective because it dismisses the seriousness of the allegations and the fact that he admitted his actions.

Other Republicans say the latest form of the Trump defense risks backfiring on the president and his team given the very different circumstances...Trump was personally involved, he admitted what he did and, perhaps most important, it happened while he already was sworn into office.

I think it was stupid... said the outside Trump adviser. It was an avoidable, unforced error. - Politico
Let's be honest, they are not 'allies.' Anyone who stands with this traitor represents his Axis of Evil.

No. Really? How could it? That's a rather timid way to put it and indicates denial.
Only his loyalist devotees will be unaffected by it. Any voters who can think beyond what's for dinner are going to be influenced by the grounds for impeachment and the proceedings. Re-electing him is not going to be very savory.

(19,066 posts)It's Trump, he's a know nothing idiot, he was always going to make mistakes like this and many others. I guarantee there are dozens of more incidents worse than this we'll never hear about.
With Trump it's never avoidable, it's who he is, a corrupt criminal who lacks the mental faculties to control himself.

(11,316 posts)Or that the man clearly DOES NOT BELONG IN OFFICE. Just, "Gee, might hurt his reelection bid .." "unforced error." How about a traitorous action involving (bi-partisan) congressionally approved military support for a critical and vulnerable ally? A blatantly thuggish "shakedown" employing public funds for clear personal gains? It wasn't a "fumble" you cretins! It was a multi-level plan to rig an upcoming presidential election! An ongoing CRIMINAL ACTION drawing in major facets of the U.S. government.
(I had an "unforced error" once .. just the once, of course .. think it involved a 300 mile road trip that happened .. simultaneously .. with a sleep over at a "friends" house .. and, of course, we'd be back before anyone could possibly know the difference .. what could go wrong?!)
