In 2008, Donald Trump Jr. attended a real estate conference, where he stated that
As it turns out, that may have been an understatement. Human rights lawyer Scott Horton, whose work in the region goes back to defending Andrei Sakharov and other Soviet dissidents, has gone through a series of studies by the Financial Times to show how funds from Russian crime lords bailed Trump out after yet anther bankruptcy. The conclusions are stark.
The money to build these projects flowed almost entirely from Russian sources. In other words, after his business crashed, Trump was floated and made to appear to operate a successful business enterprise through the infusion of hundreds in millions of cash from dark Russian sources.
He was their man.

I know the article is old, yet shows the history. The Rise of Donald Trump.
In the end, theres not a lot of difference in the outcome. Trump got money. Oligarchs cleaned their cash. Russia got their man.

He's a criminal and he only cares about himself. Hasn't he proved that enough times???
I know I am preaching to the choir here. But how many of us are thinking about...
..how we can save ourselves??

(60,010 posts)Trump's income was bank loans he never even considered paying back, he has admitted that he thought the banks were stupid in giving him repeat loans.
then add in the money laundering biz, floated thru the casinos.
I am far from the only person who wondered why trump would build 3 casinos in the same place, in effect being his own competitor, when staying afloat with them required more gross income than was even physically possible.
Kinda stupid move if you want to succeed in that biz.
But it turns out that trump's definition of success was NOT the same as honest business owners.
What if you wanted the casinos as a pass thru for dirty money?
THEN it all makes sense, right out of Goodfellas.

(12,712 posts)Good find. It reveals a lot.
Seven bankruptcies, huh? I didn't know it was that many. Now, it is a strategy to create or buy companies, let them go belly-up, bankrupt them and walk away with a fortune, but this article suggests a more nefarious situation and we really don't know how much was on purpose and how much was the ineptitude of this "great businessman" icon facade. We already know that he relied on infusions of Daddy's money over and over again and inheritance, so why not get saved by another source when you are used to that?
This guy is thick with the dark side. It is going to take several authors many years to sort out the trail of corruption and deception he leaves in his wake. We may have a really big failure who had the skills and luck to be able to run schemes for decades and appear successful...and now...woe is us.

(83,785 posts)I think he is trying to bankrupt America now. He is doing what he is told to alienate our allies, disable them and leave them vulnerable. That is what Putin would treasure most and pay heartily for. However Putin does not keep his puppets around for long. Not after they give him what he wants. Donnie thinks he is the smartest man in the room. Fact is he is just a fool and a tool.

(12,712 posts)I tend to see it that way, too, from what I know.
In fact, it is all rather multifaceted and convoluted, but what would we expect in the wake of that mind?
If we take into account he has an obvious crush on authoritarian dictators, it is obvious he loves oligarchs, too. That's where Putin comes in. I would say that Russia is now a corrupt Oligarchy overall, despite any governmental pretenses. Putin is filthy rich, (estimated net worth, $80-billion or more) and he has a pack of lessor Oligarchs beneath him. Trump would be very comfortable in a scenario like that and I think he would want America to be run that way. He certainly would admire and have envy for that.
And yes, we can assume he would make a good patsy as long as he has love and admiration for whomever plays him, (plus, add money) if they butter him up with lots of flattery. The proof of his ignorance is that he has a megalomaniac esteem for himself that does not match up with his knowledge and capacities. Truly intelligent people don't do that, nor do they have to.
People like Trump make the best fools in the long run and I have to imagine the laughs that Putin and his boys get from our resident clown. However, we are not laughing. This is a travesty.

(83,785 posts)And...
I have seen clips from Russia's state run TV. One of the newscasters saying kudos and laughing, they elected him and they did. They aren't even trying to hide it anymore. Trump did not win, they did.

(12,712 posts)Good point.
It is right there, in plain site.
When I was a kid all that Cold War stuff was about how the communists where trying to take over America, (well, look at the McCarthy debacle). That might have been real challenge with a lot of planning, strategy and many prongs if had been real.
Hahaha! But no!!!! It's Russian Oligarchs. LOL with a boisterous, self-important fool dangling from strings. Whoduathunkit? How easy can it get? A shoe-in.
