Dow futures drop in wild overnight trading after report that trade talks have stalled

U.S. stock market futures plunged after the South China Morning Post reported on Wednesday evening that the U.S. and China made no progress in deputy-level trade talks this week. The futures recovered some of those losses after the White House told CNBC’s Kayla Tausche that the SCMP report was inaccurate.

The initial report that hit futures said that higher-level talks with China’s Vice Premier Liu He would now be only one day, with the China delegation planning to leave Washington on Thursday instead of Friday as scheduled.

“We are not aware of a change in the Vice Premier’s travel plans at this time,” a White House spokesperson told CNBC.

And a senior administration official told Tausche that Liu is still scheduled to depart Friday evening, and dinner is on for the delegation Thursday evening in DC.

I'm not sure what's fact vs. fiction here, but I'm not inclined to trust our current WH.

Tomorrow might be interesting.

I admit I was worried if China pandered to Trump they were figuring in the possibility of him being in another term. This seems like possibly the opposite?

We're living in truly upside down times.
