he daughter-in-law of Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders has died at age 46, days after being diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer.
Dr. Rainè Riggs was the wife of the Vermont senator's son Levi Sanders and mother to three children, Sunnee, Ryleigh, and Grayson. She was an accomplished neuropsychologist known for her volunteer work and social advocacy.
Riggs complained of feeling ill weeks ago and was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer following a battery of tests just last week. She died two days after her formal diagnosis on Saturday, the day Sanders returned to Vermont following a heart attack he suffered on the campaign trail. "I don't know how our family will ever get over this loss as she was loved so much," said an obituary for Riggs published by the Lee & Martin Funeral home in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania. "I do know that we will continue on because we have to ... we promised her we would."

(45,806 posts)the polls. his supporters ignored his age because he was such an energetic candidate, but his age & health are now in question and I don't think he'll be able to hold on to his supporters.

(53,061 posts)neuropsychologist" and yet was completely unaware of a neuroendocrine cancer that was obviously very advanced.
Just seemed particularly cruel with a disease that is known for its cruelty. If she couldn't spot it then how could the average person?
Very shocking.

(48,955 posts)For any family this would be traumatic. Everything is fine one day. A week later the world has completely changed.
And to do this on a bright public stage of a presidential campaign, means intense press coverage of this family trauma.

I admire Bernie, and have for years. He wasn't my top choice in the last primaries, nor is in these primaries. But I admire him for how he stands his ground (not in the NRA way) on issues, and continues to try to advance public conversations. And I deeply empathize with his extended family, and the trauma of loss, and near/potential loss for too loved ones, within a week.
