a: vaccines are made from dead babies.
b: polio wasn't eradicated here in the us, they just renamed it.
I learned about the renaming of polio after I suggested we bring it back. That is when I gave the fuck up arguing with rocks.
I got the extra autism version of the flu shot this afternoon.

(26,077 posts)It shocks me so many anti vaxxers are on here. Healthy people die from the flu -- millions of them have.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,706 posts)because some strains of influenza cause a phenomenon caused a cytokine storm, in which the person's immune system is turned against them. If you are young and healthy you have a strong immune system, which, if it goes rogue on account of the virus, is more likely to make you sicker or kill you.

(5,269 posts)Seems early to have already run out but local news said Walgreens, the county health dept and other providers have run out but hope to get a resupply by next week of the 65 and older vaccine.
Thankfully myself and spouse got ours a couple of weeks ago. Although I have gotten the vaccine for over 20 years, my spouse never got a flu shot until coming down with a severe life-threatening flu in early Nov. 2016 and now is afraid to not get the shot. Several years ago we lost a friend to the flu who was only in her 30's and in good health until it hit, leaving her young children without their wonderful mom.

(21,675 posts)It's for over 65's with pre-existing serious conditions. I asked the RN at Kaiser who gave me the shot today and that's what she said.

(15,524 posts)I got the first of two Shingrex vaccinations two weeks after I had shingles this summer. I was lucky - had no idea what the sore on my stomach was, but I went to get it checked out and got script for anti-viral med that kept additional lesions from opening up. The ones I already had hurt plenty!
Raster
(20,998 posts)...all were absolutely miserable FOR MONTHS, not weeks, MONTHS.
IndyOp
(15,524 posts)- there is a short window of time during which the anti-virals can be maximally effective. I had no idea what it was. Anyone who has a rash that is painful - get to a clinic!
Nay
(12,051 posts)limit. Acyclovir for the win. When the new shingle vaccine was released I got the first shot and I'm due for the second anytime in the next couple of months.

(83,772 posts)I am on a waiting list. They said it may be next year before it is available!!!?
Seriously?
Raster
(20,998 posts)...so there was a great demand and nowhere near the vaccine available to meet that demand. In addition, one pharmacist told me that you must get the second shot within 6 months of the first, or you have to start the cycle over again with the first shot. I was on several waiting lists and called the several potential providers I had identified at least once a week to check-in. When my local CVS Minute Clinic finally got their supply in, they gave me the first shot and then put my name on the vial with the date of the original injection and then called me after two months. Be patient. The good thing about this vaccine is that it is approximately 90% effective, and if by chance you do come down with shingles, it should be a far milder case than if you had not had the Shingrex vaccine.

(4,555 posts)my first shot caused no pain and the second caused a bit of soreness, for a couple days, around the injection site.
No biggie at all compared to getting shingles.
CharleyDog
(757 posts)whereas my 3 pups, middle age dogs, got their DHPP yesterday and were very sick and in pain last night. One dog was limping, one dog was yelping in pain, the other hiding in a dark corner and wouldn't come out. They didn't want to walk (!) didn't want to eat, just suffering.
This morning, all is well. All pups feeling fine and ready to play, walk, eat, bark, back to living the high speed life of active terriers.

(23,634 posts)so i didn't have to revive another or start my own post but i have a ?
i got my flu shot 1 week ago (IIV4 PF) and today have had a
low grade fever and slight chills, feeling rundown, etc ... i have stayed in bed most of the day napping and trying conserve energy... so is it possible to still get a low grade of flu after getting the shot? i've had a week to build some immunity after all ?
asking for my sick self

Coventina
(27,120 posts)is that you can still get the flu, even with a flu shot, as there are numerous versions of the flu floating around.
The upside is that if you still get sick, you are likely to have a much milder case than without the flu shot.
If your symptoms don't improve or get worse, contact your doctor.
I hope you feel better soon!
dweller
(23,634 posts)and i've had flu before and it royally sux ... like
i said it's more mild symptoms, but symptoms all the same...
my concern is more for my grandkids, i got the shot bc i didn't want to expose them... and i saw all 3 yesterday when i felt fine, 1 is a 3 yr old,
the other 2 are 3 month old twins ... i hope i haven't exposed them if i was contagious... i've let my daughters know this morning how i was feeling and to watch the babes carefully
😔
thanks for
the well wishes,

(27,120 posts)I meant that even if you get the flu shot, you can still get a DIFFERENT strain of flu.
Apologies that I did not make that sufficiently clear.
Ms. Toad
(34,073 posts)So at a week it is definitely possible to come down with the flu (including full force, not just low grade).
In addition, last year's flu shot was only 29% more effective than not getting a shot - so even at a month or longer, it is still possible to come down with the flu. (Even the best year the flu shot is only 60% effective.)
