It's really that simple. A rather large chunk of the population is mean-spirited, bigoted, ignorant, selfish and/or stupid. And they vote.

Voter suppression, etc., notwithstanding, it's why Trump is president. He behaves just like they do, which is why he acts the way he does.

I'm not sure why they hated that so much as to give it up and vote for Trump, but that's what happened, and they ended some 80 years of POTUS being the default LotFW.
