it is far more likely that Donald J. Trump will end up on the ballot next November. So, we need to continue our sharp focus on the 2020 election. It's fine to call for, and follow, the impeachment process. But, that is a less likely thing to happen than having Trump on the ballot next year.
I hope we don't put all our hopes in other baskets. We will need to continue to work continuously toward a win in November, 2020, not only for President, but for every office on every ballot.
Please don't lose sight of that. It's crucially important.

(10,721 posts)...shouldn't have any chance at re-election, even with the electoral college. But the Republican Party is the fucking mafia. Voter suppression, foreign interference...they will do whatever it takes.

(11,317 posts)nothing happening at the federal level is going to effect what goes on at your polling station. Make your concerns about voting equipment and methodology known to election officials -- and your concerns about voter suppression (voter registration, poll locations and times, etc) known to local officials. And finally, if you have an interest and level of commitment, be a poll monitor. You can find out how at your local party headquarters.

(11,317 posts)no problem with a unified approach (all in with that). But you're NOT going to get a handle on gerrymander (or suppression) with federal offices. They make the rules, and write the maps, in the states.

(25,472 posts)They understand that there's more to the 2020 race than Trump and that an approach similar to the 2018 midterms can work again next year at all levels.
They also know that the impeachment process is largely political and are realistic about the potential outcome of a Senate trial. Even in the highly unlikely event that he's removed, that does nothing about the GOP at other levels. Voting them out is the solution.

(11,317 posts)and the down ballot is JUST as important (perhaps more so) than removing the stench from the WH.

(3,131 posts)Not just for the reason you give which l completely agree with but there will be some republican running for president.
We also have to win local races and the senate and keep the house
And none of the worries about election tampering changes that. There is no downside at all to voting.

(5,940 posts)Winning the presidency is, of course, yuuuuge. But it would mean little without the Senate, without the House, without the statehouses.
Everybody had better GOTV as if American Democracy itself depended on it. Because it does.

(43,191 posts)i don't think it hinges on whether Trump resigns, is impeached, or runs for office, I think it depends on how well Barr stifles the Rule of Law. Because that is the war, rule of law and Constitution against fascist enablers.

(17,931 posts)Because if he leaves, on his own accord or not, the Rethugs will nominate someone just as odious, but most likely not nearly as stupid. As I mentioned to my better half in 2017, one thing we have going for us is he's a complete, fucking idiot. The next round may be smarter, far more dangerous fascism. Eye on the prize, folks.

(202 posts)We need officials at all levels - not who say let the past be the past - not who say let history judge - we need those who will see to it that every crime committed will be punished with appropriately long prison sentences.
If we forgive, we will forget, and see another Republican horror show. I am still sickened to think of President Nixon having a formal D.C. funeral.
We need liberal dems at every level of government to ensure that "no one is above the law" becomes a true phrase. And we need these people at every level to clean up the horrific mess that the Republican Party will be leaving behind. We need more laws, more regulations, more honest and decent federal bureaucrats to keep a watchful eye on the power hungry, traitors and narcissists of the present and the future.

(90,347 posts)There's no amount of over vote that's going to defeat the way Trump going to cheat, we should be shouting that he's going to cheat to win, as he has, and then shoot for not certifying his election in the house.
Screw this, the guy who already cheated to win by soliciting Ukraine isn't going to stop because he got impeached ... no way.
