(51,308 posts)Just no.
Texas sure seems like a great place to live.

(646 posts)Cop walked around the house and never identified himself.
Shot her through a window.
The neighbor who called in for a welfare check is torn up.
I know many good cops. But just going boom?
What the actual???

(92 posts)Another POC killed by a white cop.
Judging by the initial reports, this seems to be an unjustified homicide.

(1,568 posts)They will say some bullshit about how he feared for his life. I hope I am wrong, but I don't have much hope since he was responding to a call and she did have firearm either on or near her. Of course neither of those justify shooting someone in their own house after sneaking around without announcing themselves (didn't appear they did in the video), but they seem to find ways to justify anything.

(646 posts)According to a post with family info.
FTW police have already released video footage and he did not identify himslef. He shot her through a window. I figure they will throw him under the bus
I think the family has already gotten with Lee Merrit.
She didn't have her gun on her.

(1,568 posts)They show some still shots, I got the initial impression that it was a still shot from the video that was released.
I did go back and now I am not sure that's what they were showing, but rather were being sneaky about their editing. But either way, I don't see how it would matter even if she had it on her. She was in her home and the police were creepily sneaking around her backyard without announcing themselves. Most normal people should be able to identify with the victim and think about how fucked up it would be if they were murdered in their own home after investigating a noise in their backyard.

(5,969 posts)He joined the department recently but I don't know whether he was new on the job.
From the reports it seems it was a Hands up demand and rather quickly followed by the deadly shot. I'd be mortified if someone had entered my house and I'd probably not be able to just raise my hands. Not to mention that sudden movements in the dark are also dangerous.
I wonder what the consequences will be if there will be any. I cannot stomach watching this kind of footage should it ever be made public but I suppose for a jury it will also depend how much time she even had to react.
Read the story. Ick

(2,201 posts)Who knows?
But if there's not more to this story, then here is what I'd like to see happen:
I think the police officer should face the same consequences that I would (I've pretty much given up on the whole 'higher standards' thing), if I looked into somebody else's house, and then saw them, and shot them to death.
Even if I was honestly mistaken, and/or scared, I wouldn't even be going to trial. I'd be negotiating a plea bargain, then going to prison.

(1,568 posts)They were sneaking around someone's backyard with no signs of announcing themselves, and then they looked into her windows and shot her. It doesn't matter if there was a gun in the house or not. Police cannot do that to people. How are people supposed to know those are police and not people trying break into their homes to cause them harm?

(2,201 posts)That's why the main point of my post was about what I think should happen if there wasn't more to the story.

(1,568 posts)after having arguments with real life people over how they thought Amber Guyger was somehow wronged by being sentenced to 10 years. It's wasn't a lot of people, but the fact there were any non-connected (as in not her close friends or family) people defending her just blows my mind.

(22,357 posts)According to The Marshall Project, there is a correlation between veteran status and likelihood of shooting their firearms while on the job, but it is difficult to study because of the lack of records.

(31,261 posts)One time a neighbor noticed and instead of calling police, he came over unarmed and knocked. I love to sleep in the dark, lights non-existent. I can imagine what could happen if a police officer was checking my home by moving around unannounced. How would I know he or she was police instead of a burgular or worse?

(45,457 posts)it sounds deadly.
Dark skinned people will always be "a dark figure" who "may have a weapon". And the officer assessed all of that from outside the house looking through a window, and then shooting the dark figure through the window.
