Jury: Leader of Dallas-based anti-Muslim group must pay ex-Minnesota sheriff $600K for assault

A jury has awarded a former Minnesota lawman $600,000 in a civil lawsuit against the leader of a Dallas-based anti-Muslim group who he says assaulted him.

In their decision Friday, Dallas County jurors were split 10-2 in favor of former Hennepin County Sheriff Richard Stanek, who was seeking compensation for the pain and suffering, physical disfigurement and mental anguish he said he suffered in the 2017 incident with John Guandolo.

The case centered on Stanek's accusation that Guandolo had shoved and punched him at a law enforcement gathering in June 2017 after Stanek challenged the Understanding the Threat leader over "discriminatory" materials he had handed out.

"I felt it was important to stand up to John Guandolo and Understanding the Threat and their agenda of intolerance," Stanek said in a news release. "We should always be able to engage in civil discourse, even the most difficult or sensitive topics, without resorting to violence.

Previous John Guandolo mentions on DU:

* Disgraced FBI agent John Guandolo starts off the Pittsburgh shooting conspiracy theories
* Ex-FBI agent who accused Obama of treason loses lucrative gig training law enforcement officers
* "number of ethical breaches and bizarre conduct which included admitting to having affairs with female FBI agents and a confidential source"

So, kudos to Stanek. Good job.
