'In 1981, Murdoch bought The Times, his first British broadsheet and, in 1985, became a naturalized U.S. citizen, giving up his Australian citizenship, to satisfy the legal requirement for U.S. television network ownership.[5]'

The EB-5 investor visa offers permanent U.S. residency and eventually citizenship when a person invests between US$500,000 and US$1-million in a new commercial enterprise that produces at least 10 full-time jobs.

This EB-5 program was started in 1990. I dunno what was in place in 1985. It seems back in 1985, it wasn't that hard for Europeans become citizens. Many Middle Easterners became citizens in the late 70s and 80s
