You can almost imagine the reality show excitement that surely went into the ill-considered plan to introduce Anne Sacoolas, the American diplomatic wife who killed 19-year-old motorcyclist Harry Dunn when she drove down the wrong side of an English lane in August, to Dunns grieving parents. Sacoolas left the U.K. in early September under diplomatic immunity and has not been seen in public since.
The Dunn family, now in the United States to drum up support to send Sacoolas back to the U.K. to face justice, had accepted an urgent invitation by the White House from National Security Adviser Robert OBrien, to visit Donald Trump in Washington, D.C. Trump, it seems, thought he could convince the Dunns to meet the woman who killed their son, and would do so by opening a side door through which she would walk. The whole scene would be captured by a pool of photographers who had been summoned for the meeting.
But the Dunns would have none of it and refused to meet her. The Dunn family spokesman Radd Seiger said that the family felt ambushed when the bombshell was dropped that Sacoolas was next door.
They had envisioned meeting her one day, but as Seiger told The Daily Beast, only on British soil and only with mediators, counselors and their legal team in tow.
In a statement on the Dunns Justice4Harry GoFundMe page, Seiger explained what happened. The family had four surprises yesterday, he wrote. Firstly, being invited to the White House in the first place which came right out of the blue.

In case you hit a paywall on DB, here's a Reuters article:

U.S. security chief 'heaped pain' on grieving parents of UK teen: lawyer
LONDON (Reuters) - Donald Trumps national security adviser heaped pain and grief on the parents of a British teenager killed in a car crash by trying to hold a meeting at the White House between them and a U.S. diplomats wife who was involved, the parents lawyer said.
FILE PHOTO: Tim Dunn and Charlotte Charles, parents of British teen Harry Dunn who was killed in a car crash on his motorcycle, allegedly by the wife of an American diplomat, speak during a interview in the Manhattan borough of New York City, New York, U.S., October 15, 2019. REUTERS/Eduardo Munoz/File Photo
Charlotte Charles and Tim Dunn were invited to a surprise meeting with the U.S. president at his office on Wednesday where they were further shocked to learn that Anne Sacoolas, the American woman involved in the fatal crash, was in the building.
Mark Stephens, the lawyer for Charles and Dunn, said national security adviser Robert OBrien had the idea of overseeing a coming together of the families before they would then hug in front of an assembled media.
(OBrien has) heaped grief and pain on the family by making them go through this but not allowing them to get the closure they need by talking to Mrs Sacoolas before they can go onto the grieving stage, Stephens told BBC radio on Thursday.
<snip>
He said he was sorry about Harry and then he sprung the surprise that Mrs Sacoolas was in another room in the building and whether we want to meet her there and then, Tim Dunn said.
We said no because as weve been saying from the start we want to meet Mrs Sacoolas but we want to do it in the UK so the police can interview her. We didnt want to be sort of railroaded, not into a circus as such, but a meeting we werent prepared for.

(7,432 posts)What kind of hubris is operating here? What incredible cruelty! They're trying to manipulate a grieving couple into a sympathy crouch? OH, the poor, sad killer! Dunn's parents need to mind-meld with the person to took their son's life? They want to sucker the couple into hugging their son's murderer? Trumpy takes "insensitivity" into a whole new direction. Trumpy isn't even human.

only a sociopath and carnival barker like trump would decide to make a show of it. a fucking reality show. if that doesn't prove to anyone that he is utterly bereft of empathy or compassion, they are probably more like him than not.

(2,009 posts)... great minds think alike...
I can't quite figure out how it is no one stopped this. Not one of the many people who had to be involved in getting both parties in place, as well as the press, had the compunction to put a stop to it.
In my head, I know that having a moral compass is a disqualifying characteristic for a job anywhere near this (barely) ambulatory cesspool, and, after three years, they've pretty well weeded out anyone with a scintilla of humanity who snuck through the vetting process, but... damn.

Trump cheated and stole his way to the oval office, but to let this crime go unpunished will wreak tremendous long-term havoc on this country. I want to have faith that our Democratic leadership and the handful of Republicans with sane minds will put a stop to the Trump shit show and it won't be a moment too soon...
