Michael Jordan spends $7 million to open a clinic for the uninsured in Charlotte

The Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic in Charlotte held a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday attended by the athlete
'This is a very emotional thing for me to be able to give back to a community that has supported me over the years,' Jordan said during the ceremony
Center has been in operation about three weeks
More than 300 people have already been seen by staff doctors, social workers and other health-care professionals.
Two years ago, Jordan donated $7million to get the center funded
The center will be open Mondays through Fridays from 8am to 5pm
Walk-ins are accepted along with same day appointment scheduling

Then again, tens of millions of Americans do since we don't guarantee basic health coverage for all.

country was like other countries and we had healthcare for all how he could put that charity money into economic development or better education for the community

  1. Michael Jordan's actual home town is New York City, NY His links to North Carolina are High School in Wilmington (208 mi SE) and UNC-Chapel Hill (137 mi NE).

  2. Novant Health is a sponsor of the Charlotte Hornets. A hospital chain from Winston-Salem NC.


This is not to diminish what he is doing, but these facts can be overlooked by out of town journalists.

Is vastly underserved in many ways, not just Medically. I know, it is part of the "hood" not unlike and far from where I live, also hood. The area is reasonably close to center city and is rapidly gentrifying. Plus it's the "other" team if you will in Healthcare dominance in a county that's now over 1 Million residents, though in some ways still have big city envy.
