Move over, Honeycrisp: New apple to debut at grocery stores

By NICHOLAS K. GERANIOS today

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — They call it the Cosmic Crisp. It’s not a video game, a superhero or the title of a Grateful Dead song.

It’s a new variety of apple, coming to a grocery store near you Dec. 1

Cosmic Crisp is the first apple ever bred in Washington state, which grows the majority of the United States’ apples. It’s expected to be a game changer.

Already, growers have planted 12 million Cosmic Crisp apple trees, a sign of confidence in the new variety. While only 450,000 40-pound (18-kilogram) boxes will be available for sale this year, that will jump to more than 2 million boxes in 2020 and more than 21 million by 2026.

The apple variety was developed by Washington State University. Washington growers, who paid for the research, will have the exclusive right to sell it for the first 10 years.

this program from our local NPR station yesterday was terrific. I learned so much more about apples from the program than I have in years of having an interest in apples. When I got where I was going I had to stay in the car and listen to the last 15 minutes of it.

Just below the photo is a link to 'Listen'.

At $7.99 for a 3 LB bag in Indiana, it'd be nice to find a cheaper variety that I like.

But I haven't tried the honeycrisps for that yet. I'm going to have to get some next shopping trip and make a jar.

They are grown in PA, and I think only one place in GA. Sweet, crisp, some tanginess.

Looking forward to trying this new one.

are in abundance. My favorite apple is Gold Rush, a rusty golden variety that sweetens with age. It is the last to be harvested here in North Georgia, and keeps for a long time. Super crunchy, sweet-tart, holds it shape when cooked.

I love to make apple pies and applesauce.

Apple pies always have granny smiths and also some sweeter ones. It makes for a fresh tasting pie. Applesauce is mostly the sweeter apples cooked with the skins. Then I puree the whole shebang in the blender. Homemade applesauce is so much thicker.

I can hardly wait to try these new ones. They'll be pretty pricey but we'll have to at least get two to try them out.
