and Pelosi is interim President, who will the Republicans run to try and get the White House back in 2020?

(983 posts)will impeach both trump and pence thereby installing pelosi as president, think again.
People need to get real before 2020.

(10,129 posts)In the worst case, Pence would resign first, be replaced by a Republican VP named by Trump and then Trump would resign - like how Gerald Ford replaced VP Spiro Agnew before he replaced Nixon. That way the Speaker of the House, who was also a Democrat in 1974, does not ascend to the Oval Office.
The person who replaces Trump may well be their standard bearer for 2020 - as long as he/she doesn't pardon Trump - which would hurt their candidacy like it did Gerald Ford's.
It could be someone from the 2016 GOP Primary. Maybe Romney, Huntsman, Nikki Haley or some up and coming GOP Governor or someone else.
I continue to doubt that Trump will be their standard bearer for 2020. When they've concluded their internal polling, they'll throw him under the bus for a candidate with a much better chance.

(50,562 posts)We're already going to have to drag the bastard out of the White House by the heels when it comes time for him to leave.

(10,129 posts)Nixon was faced with resign (& get a pardon deal behind the scenes) or be impeached.
Trump will take a similar deal if under similar circumstances. And he may well be under those circumstances - not because the GOP suddenly decided to uphold the constitution. He'd be under those circumstances if the GOP internal polling showed them they would be much more competitive for the White House and down ticket races if Trump was replaced by a more appealing GOP candidate I think that day of reckoning is inevitable and coming.

(990 posts)Replacing Vice President
Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.
Constitution: United States Constitution
It is both the House and the Senate
As to Ford
According to The New York Times, Nixon "sought advice from senior Congressional leaders about a replacement." The advice was unanimous. "We gave Nixon no choice but Ford," House Speaker Carl Albert recalled later.[31] Ford agreed to the nomination, telling his wife that the Vice Presidency would be "a nice conclusion" to his career.[35]
From Wikipedia Jerry Ford
Carl Albert was a Democrat

(10,129 posts)the GOP would stay with Trump. They seem to have that choice at the moment.
Even though Trump's transgressions are more numerous and more blatant and/or grave than Nixon, right now, Trump seems to be in a better position politically. The GOP do not seem in any kind of a mood to uphold the Constitution. The polls do not indicate a strong enough public pressure for them to do so at this point in time.
That could change but it doesn't seem as likely this time. Trump's supporters are dug in and seem tolerant to violations of the constitution or law.

(50,562 posts)Blake Farenthold is a disgraced congressman from Texas. (He's the one who looks like a fat Alfred E. Neuman, who refuses to pay an $84,000 sexual harassment settlement, and who's been photographed, as an adult, wearing blue jammies with duckies and bunnies on them.) By running Rep. Farenthold, who is as stupid as he is repulsive, the GOP will be sending a very clear signal: they're throwing the election and forcing the Democrats to clean up Trump's mess.

(43,189 posts)Republicans in the Senate wont cede the White House for a second.
If it gets bad enough theyll give up Trump but hold the line at Pence.
Better option would be leaving an embattled Pence in office in the hopes he tried running in 2020. The man has zero charisma or magnetism and would be an easy opponent. We could run the table with all of the residual Trumpian baggage.

(3,363 posts)It literally has a zero percent chance of happening. It's already extremely unlikely Republicans will convict and remove Trump.
There is absolutely no way Republicans will ever remove Pence knowing Pelosi would take over.

(23,138 posts)Repugs would not vote to remove Pence and drumpf, never. They are too tied and greedy for power and are not about to make their gravest enemy, Pelosi, the head of our country.
