Likely Merkel, Macron, & Trudeau just told Trump about Doral, Yeah, we're not going there.

Maybe Abe of Japan did, too.

Locating the G-7 meeting at Trump Doral Resort is screamingly obvious corruption to everybody except Trump. Most Republicans even understand that, even though they're too cowed and spineless to say so.

The other G-7 leaders would have been enabling that (further) corruption of a fellow democratic government had they attended, since by declining to go to Doral they are able to prevent it.

Furthermore, even though most expenses of the meeting are paid by the host country, there are costs of attending that fall on each of the member states themselves. Those of course are paid out of the six guest nations' tax revenues. The six national leaders would be using the taxes paid by their own citizens to facilitate graft by the President of the United States.

It's easy for them to avoid all that. Just tell Trump, sorry, I'm not going to a G-7 or any other official meeting in a property that you own or have a financial interest in.

I think it's most likely that that message got sent somehow.

(Boris Johnson, and Conte of Italy, strike me as probably not caring that Trump would personally profit from the meeting being at Doral.)

Well, those too.

and lots of other work around the whole property, in order for it to be adequate for the visiting countries.

AND, there would have been advance teams coming to see how the work was progressing, and they would be staying at the hotel in the meantime...

Basically, Trump wanted to get a new facelift for the Doral at taxpayer expense.

You and I, of course, and the rest of the US taxpayers. Not to mention other property maintenance, like new roofs, painting, upgrading the furniture - yeah, even if Trump didn't charge foreign delegations anything (hah!) he a would have gotten a free property upgrade thanks to Uncle Sam.

Trump never, never does anything without analyzing how it's going to benefit him.

He'd have still gotten the free upgrades and had those "Liberal" countries to trash. It still profited him and his talking points.

My money is still on the vulnerable Republicans made him walk this one back. Internal polling showed it to be a tenuous polling point previously and I'm betting now it's worse. He thought they'd capitulate and fall in line and they rose up for their own interest to their chamber leaders.

Time will tell, but I suspect I'm correct on this one issue. Trump was just reminded he needs them as much if not more than they need him.

most heavily from those facing tough re-election campaigns next year.

But where there's money involved Trump ignores advice from smarter people and pleas from loyal allies who will be harmed all the time. Just look at Syria.

Only other G-7 members had the power to absolutely and immediately shut this one of the sleaze-bag's embarrassingly obvious money-grabs down, no ifs, ands, or buts.

Said something similar on AM Joy Saturday morning. He was saying everybody was focusing on the corruption and conflicts this presents for the USA, and nobody was talking about the conflicts it presented for the other countries. They also could be facing corruption in their own countries by paying Trump. Some of the people or associated team they would have to travel with, by that country's law may not be allowed to accept gifts or make payments to Trump. Thus would not accept the invitation to come.

I love Frank Figliuzzi, he has such great insight.

are the ones who nixed this, then our own government is not enforcing our own Constitution.

I hope Merkel, Macron and Trudeau are not the reason for this.

...and protecting him, especially Barr at DoJ and Pompeo at State. Career professionals fired, stifled, denounced, demonized, persecuted, and stripped of their pension if they dare raise a reasoned or principled or ethical objection. The Cabinet, National Security Council, and WH Staff purged of any informed and responsible voices and replaced with craven sycophants. Federal law enforcement proven ineffectual, neutered, against him. Intelligence agencies dismissed, ignored, and their leadership gutted. The Republican controlled Senate in supplication to him, refusing to enforce the Constitution. The judiciary newly crowded with rightwing judges, while Trump defies any and all Congressional subpoenas and oversight, determined to push every refusal big and small all the way to SCOTUS, where 5 Republicans await -- including 2 he installed himself for their support of near limitless executive power and immunity... when it's a Republican president.

The pillars or our democracy are being shoved aside like a Montenegran president, when not captured and co-opted as cudgels for Trump's own use.

We're down to our last few defenses left.

- A free press, intrepidly staying the course even while under heavy continual verbal assault, and literally physically in danger

- Impeachment by the House, also under around-the-clock verbal assault and threats (and memes) of violence

- And the 2020 election, heavily stacked as it will be in favor of Republicans by the Electoral College, as intentionally suppressed as millions of Democratic voters will be, and as undermined as the whole thing will be, pushed in the direction of Trump, by enemies foreign and domestic.

American democracy is in one of its most perilous moments. Yes, it's shocking and frightening, to us and to the world, when the United States of America, of all nations, is looking very much at risk of being unable to protect its own democracy.

If Germany, France, and Canada just lent us a sympathetic and helpful hand against this one new threat, however minor, I'd rather that it happened than not. We're better off with other free democracies being concerned and wanting to help than we'd be without them.

No wonder that Trump the wannabe autocrat hates us having allies in Western Europe and Canada. They recognize him for what he is, and very much want to see America get through this.
