Whole30 Becomes First Dietary Program to Commit to Comprehensive Animal Welfare Standards

Some good news for Monday

What we eat impacts not just our own wellbeing, but the wellbeing of farmed animals. The Whole30 program, believing—as most Americans do—that animals should be raised with compassion, has joined forces with the ASPCA to improve the lives of farm animals through its Whole30 Approved® program.

By 2021, all Whole30 Approved products sold in stores and online will be required to be certified by an animal welfare program recognized by the ASPCA’s Shop With Your Heart program or, short of official certification, meet rigorous animal welfare standards with third-party auditing to ensure compliance.

Additionally, Whole30 will require that by 2024, all Whole30 Approved products containing chicken ingredients source from farms with higher standards for chicken breeds, housing conditions and slaughter practices—aligning with requirements endorsed by 10 leading animal welfare organizations [PDF].

Whole30 is the first non-vegan dietary program to stand up for better treatment of farm animals, and the ASPCA applauds Whole30 for its leadership and vision.
