(86,650 posts)I hope he is well. All this crap going on is probably unhealthy for him after all his years of being right there.
My mom, on the other hand, at 91, is so pissed about it all that I thinks it's half of what keeps her going.

(86,650 posts)when she passes, which we've kind of been anticipating for a while. She's not well and it takes a lot to care for her as she chooses to stay at home and she's lucid about 30% of the time but when she's there she can be pretty funny. I'll go and see her during the holidays, she lives three large states away. I am glad to have her around all this time, and thankful.

(86,650 posts)The big bummer is that she lives with her partner of many years and he's a flushlimpgut, mf45 wingnut. So we have to navigate conversation around his presence. Fortunately he finds something else to do when I'm there most times. (I can't visit often, 1800 miles away) but not so for my sisters who tend to her affairs. Otherwise he's tolerable, he knows better than to argue with three educated women... he's gonna lose.
Love my mom, 91 is wearing on her but she's lived the longest of anyone in my family save my one grandmother, wasn't her mother, and she's catching up to her next year.

(13,571 posts)Also about Harper's publisher Lewis Lapham.
Such important voices in recent past.
The proudest day of my life was when I got a hand written letter from Lapham asking me to write something for the magazine because of my letter to him. Carte blanche, 20 pages double spaced, he wanted. I blocked, froze, couldn't do it. He was my absolute hero. The thought of submitting my words to him was beyond possibility. I blew my best break.
Do you regret it? What an offer.
