James 5:17-18

"Elijah was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit."

As Representative Cummings enters his honors to lie in state in the US Capitol, I find this verse particularly comforting. The greatest prophets are not imbued with superhuman gifts: they simply believe and work for a better world, and call on others to do the same.

Rep. Cummings was a lion, and his loss is everyone's loss. But he to the end believed in this country. And so I will too, whatever the temptations to give up are.

Then he went up from there to Bethel; and as he was going up by the way, young lads came out from the city and mocked him and said to him, “Go up, you baldhead; go up, you baldhead!” 24 When he looked behind him and saw them, he cursed them in the name of the LORD. Then two female bears came out of the woods and tore up forty-two lads of their number. 25 And he went from there to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria.

But, to each their own.
