Born on October 26, 1912: Don Siegel

I'm doing this a day early, as I have no guarantee of computer access tomorrow.

Born: October 26, 1912; Chicago, Illinois, U.S.
Died: April 20, 1991 (aged 78); Nipomo, California, U.S.

Donald Siegel (/ˈsiːɡəl/; October 26, 1912 – April 20, 1991) was an American film director and producer. His name variously appeared in the credits of his films as both Don Siegel and Donald Siegel. He is best known for the original sci-fi film Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), as well as five films with Clint Eastwood, including the police thriller Dirty Harry (1971) and the prison drama Escape from Alcatraz (1979), and John Wayne's final film, the 1976 Western The Shootist.
....

Cameos

He has a cameo role (as a bartender) in Eastwood's Play Misty for Me as well as in Dirty Harry. In Philip Kaufman's 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers, a remake of Siegel's own 1956 film, he appears as a "pod" taxi driver. In Charley Varrick starring Walter Matthau (a film slated for Eastwood but ultimately turned down by the actor), he has a cameo as a ping-pong player. He appears in the 1985 John Landis ‘Into the Night.’

Dirty Harry is the first screen adventure for Clint Eastwood's maverick San Francisco detective, "Dirty" Harry Callahan, which led to a series of successful sequels throughout the Seventies and Eighties. In Dirty Harry, the year is 1971 and San Francisco faces the terror of a maniac known as Scorpio -- who snipes at innocent victims and demands ransom through notes left at the scene of the crime. Inspector Harry Callahan is assigned to the case along with his newest partner Inspector Chico Gonzalez to track down Scorpio and stop him. And Callahan will get the job done... one way or the other…no matter what “the system” prescribes. Don Siegel directed this box-office blockbuster, which remains one of the best police thrillers ever made.

To my surprise, Don Siegel did not direct Magnum Force. I don't know how that happened. Here's the trailer anyway:
