Breaking: Former Trump advisor John Bolton's lawyers are in contact with impeachment probe panels

Former national security advisor John Bolton’s lawyers have been in touch with officials working on the House committees conducting an impeachment probe into President Donald Trump, a person close to Bolton told NBC News on Friday.

The news comes more than a week after the White House’s former top Europe expert, Fiona Hill, testified to Congress that Bolton has been so disturbed by efforts to get Ukraine to investigate Trump’s political opponents that he called it a “drug deal.”

Hill told the impeachment inquiry members that Bolton told her he did not want to be part of that push, which involved White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney.

Hill also reportedly testified that Bolton had called Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, a hand grenade.

The impeachment probe is focused on pressure by Trump and his emissaries on Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden. Trump also wants Ukraine to investigate a conspiracy theory that elements in that country helped cover up evidence related to hacking of a Democratic National Committee computer server in the run-up to the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

John Bolton's lawyers are talking to impeachment inquiry committees

Lawyers for former national security adviser John Bolton have had talks with the impeachment inquiry committees about a possible deposition, according to a source familiar.

Former NSC official Fiona Hill testified before the committee last week that she saw "wrongdoing" in the American foreign policy and tried to report it to officials including the National Security Council's attorney, according to multiple sources.

"She saw wrongdoing related to the Ukraine policy and reported it," one source said. The same source told CNN that Hill testified that Bolton referred to Giuliani -- Trump's personal attorney -- as a "hand grenade" who was "going to blow everybody up.”

Hill additionally told lawmakers about what she described as a rogue operation carried out by US Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland and White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, which Bolton characterized as being like a "drug deal," that source said.

Another source familiar said Hill testified about a July 10 meeting on Ukraine where Sondland discussed investigations, something that was interpreted as a reference to the President's call for investigations into the Bidens.

Bolton and Hill both were concerned about the comments, and Bolton urged Hill to report the incident to National Security Council lawyer John Eisenberg, according to the source familiar with her testimony.

Top US diplomat to Ukraine Bill Taylor told Congress that Bolton had expressed concerns about a call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to Taylor's opening statement. “Ambassador Bolton opposed a call between President Zelensky and President Trump out of concern that it would ‘be a disaster,'" Taylor wrote.

It would create absolute panic in the White House, I am sure.

which John Bolton shows up.

I do think you're right that whatever direction he goes, it'll change the narrative dramatically.

I don't think he is an ass-kisser. I do think he takes his job very seriously. When someone like John Bolton sees Trump as a danger to our country, then we are in some pretty deep doo-doo.

He knows a "drug deal" when he sees one.

First off, he's not some "soft" Republican. If Bolton had a major problem with Trump he wouldn't have signed up for the job in the first place (however, I can not think of any Republican who has turned down an offer)

I've been following this, and as far as I can tell, Bolton doesn't seem to have that much of a problem with Trump as he has with the people around Trump. If Trump were to fire Rudy Giuliani (and his "crew&quot that may satisfy Bolton (along with NDA and a brand new luxury condo on Fifth Avenue!).

Depending upon John Bolton for helping oust Trump could be like asking the lion to lick the blood off your face.

He might be the only person in Washington as vindictive as Trump, he'll have no problem spilling all the beans.

He looks exactly like my late father-in-law, who was the sweetest, nicest man in the world, and the first member of my wife's family to express his approval of our relationship.

I don't like that scowling mug reminding me of the loss of a much better man...
