" If anything happens to me there will be such a tremendous recession/depression the likes which you have never seen before."

(19,066 posts)Was talking to a couple at lunch today that I work with, both smart guys and we were talking about how our company got rid of their pension plan, so they were talking about 401K performance, both were saying how great it's been recently. I replied, "Are you serious? The markets have been awful for 2 full years now, our company's 401K has done awful." They both have no idea that 2018 was a year of negative returns for the stock market and 2019 isn't good either. The gains mostly happened when Obama was still President, and virtually all of them happened when his tax rates were still in effect.
Trump has not been good for Wall Street.

(82,849 posts)But my understanding of the funds I'm invested in are that most of their stock is either international or green technology. So, if you're not in the American market or in stock that doesn't have to do with unsustainable, polluting industries, you could be doing all right.

(19,066 posts)And people see their 401K grow because they keep paying into it every pay check. They think, "Oh, 2 years ago I had $100K, today I have $120K, I'm doing great, that's 20% growth!" They don't realize that they (and whatever their company might match) put $15K in of their own wages.
2018 was the end of the bull market, most people's rate of return on their 401Ks that year was negative a few points 2019 is a little better. But the last 2 years have been bad for investors overall.
