Crowd roars as Obama appears to take a shot at Trump during Cummings eulogy:

‘There’s nothing weak about being honorable’

By Brad Reed

Former President Barack Obama on Friday drew applause at the funeral of the late Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) when he took what many in the audience interpreted as veiled shots against President Donald Trump.

In praising Cummings for his kindness and integrity, Obama argued that those virtues should not be synonymous with “weakness,” which is a term that Trump has regularly used to disparage administration officials who do not do his bidding.

“There’s nothing weak about kindness and compassion,” Obama said. “There’s nothing weak about looking out for others. There is nothing weak about being honorable. You’re not a sucker to have integrity and to treat others with respect.”

The former president then mused about the title of “honorable” that gets bestowed onto lawmakers after they get elected to office — but he said that only some politicians deserve the title even before their election.

“You know, this is a title that we confer on all kinds of people who get elected to public office,” he said. “We’re supposed to introduce them as ‘honorable.’ But Elijah Cummings was honorable before he was elected to office — there is a difference!”

At this point, the room broke out into applause.

do you think the republicans sitting there listening to a great man speak with eloquence, intelligence, and even humor, thought for one minute that their current president is a disgrace in every sense of the word?

Immediately after, media showed trump, face red and distorted, screaming beneath the sounds of helicopter blades, about what a disgrace was so unfairly brought down upon him by the intelligence community.

JFC, can't they see the difference between what a president is and was, and what a monster we now have? Can they see it, even if they don't speak it? I wonder.

Stark contrast to the virtue-lacking Trump. He referenced the seed/soil parable and could have gone into excoriating detail about the soil that yielded only thorns and briers...I would've love to have heard what character briers look like!

looks to us. The world can no longer depend on us--except for the petty tyrants, criminals, and dictators that thing currently infesting the White House so longs to emulate. This country has fallen in my eyes. I was never so disappointed in my fellow citizens as I was when I woke up on the morning of November 9, 2016. The most important thing now is do we have the will to rise again? I certainly hope so. I will do my best to help.

It is up to us.

we show respectful humility towards the world. When we participate as an equal and not as the military superpower, no matter how benign, that we’ve been since WWII.

I would love to see us use our resources to lead in science, medicine, climate husbandry and the active pursuit of peace. I would love to see our government have a Peace Department actively promoting peace as an objective.

All we need to do is live up to our potential, to all the things we say we stand for only for real. Put more emphasis on things like the Peace Corps. We have all the ideas and the means and the the will.

Perhaps President Obama was taking a shot at Trump, but I really do not think so, at least not intentionally. I do think that President Obama was taking a shot at the fake "honor" that is bestowed on people JUST because they ascend to office.

I will make the comparison between Cummings, Obama, Trump, and McConnell (who was quite publicly snubbed today).

Cummings was born to sharecropper parents, worked as a youth to integrate swimming pools in his native Baltimore, studied and practiced law prior to entering public service. He spent his life protecting the weak and advocating for change in society.

President Obama, born middle class but raised by a single mother and his grandparents. Went to college, became a community organizer then a law professor. President Obama spent his life helping others and trying to shape future leaders in the intricacies of the Constitution.

Trump: Born wealthy, history of conduct disorder. Sent to military school as incorrigible. Avoided military service. Spent entire life trying to enrich himself and partying.

McConnell: born to prominent family. went to law school. joined reserves to avoid combat in Vietnam while still claiming military service. Was only in reserves for a few months and failed medical, but somehow, he was "honorably discharged". Spent entire career in politics back dealing to pork barrel his state and stay in office.

All 4 have the title "honorable" as do others who do not deserve it.

That is what President Obama was talking about.

We could have avoided W if the Big Dog had been re-electable. We could have avoided Trump to keep Obama. We could have saved our environment and given Al Gore the support he needed to clean it up. We could have given our children and grand children a planet to inherit instead of the sludge and plastic world we are leaving them. Why the hell not get rid of the electoral college? It serves no purpose beyond giving one really fucked up corrupt party power over all of the rest of us. Yes we really do need to do this.
