President Obama Left Quite a Mark at the Funeral Service for Elijah Cummings
It just so happens he left it on another president.

There are quite a few people in this city who are adept at throwing shade. But there is no shade like Obama shade. Obama shade is deeper and cooler than the shade thrown by ordinary mortals. Under Obama shade, you could play hockey in the Mojave. On Friday, people said their final farewells to Rep. Elijah Cummings up in Baltimore. It was a lyrical, joyful service at which a number of people spoke. One of them was Hillary Rodham Clinton, who said, in part:
Mmmmmm, Bible shade. Let me get out of this hot sun for a moment. But the ombre de resistance came from the most recent former president, who gave everyone in church and on television some coverage.
I was sitting here and I was just noticing the honorable Elijah E. Cummings. You know, this is a title that we confer on all kinds of people who get elected to public office. We are supposed to introduce them as honorable. But Elijah Cummings was honorable before he was elected to office. Theres a difference. There is a difference if you were honorable and treated others honorably. Outside the limelight. On the side of a road. In a quiet moment, counseling somebody you work with. Letting your daughters know you love them.
Yeah, that'll leave a mark.

(16,254 posts)them as "honorable." was priceless. Those in attendance erupted with laughter and applause.
Then, he went on with, "But Elijah Cummings was honorable before he was elected to office."
There had to have been some squirming in their seats by a few of the Congresscritters who attended.

Only Obama could have shown such rhetorical power and so captured the longing of our nation for justice.
I was not aware of Congressman Cummings until the hearing where he spoke to Michael Cohen, beautifully, and with great compassion for a man who was confessing to awful things.
Now I wish I'd known more of Congressman Cummings. It is terrible that he is gone, but in going when he did, he gave us an opportunity to see what we have lost.

(42,334 posts)He's probably already pissed he didn't get invited to speak. His 2 nemeses were speaking. You know he's playing it over and over and stewing in his own flop sweat.

(28,125 posts)And he'd have little comprehension of what was being said if he did.
But I wonder if any red state, white ministers, of all people, would understand these words and have even a twinge of acknowledgement of how mighty Pres. Obama's words are and perhaps even a bit of guilt over how they've been wronging this country. Naww, silly thought; their souls too far buried in the muck of lies.

Strength, honor, forgiveness, humility, these are qualities that Trump will never have. These are qualities embodied in the character of Jesus, whom the evangelicals purport to serve.
Some Bible followers think that Trump is the Anti-Christ for the very reason that the evangelical power base has embraced him. I say that Representative Cummings was the Anti-Trump.
Honorable Elijah E. Cummings indeed.
