General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI just finished watching the entire funeral service for Elijah Cummings
It was something else - Maya tore the Con to shreds without calling his name.
Some of the other tributes had me in tears. I was able to see the depth of the connections among Baltimore politicians of all races.
I'm so glad I took the time to watch it all. Elijah was a good man.
By the way I'm worried about Bill Clinton - he doesn't look well.
For those who couldn't watch live - here's the link

(42,334 posts)Said to my bestie: you know you're old when you look forward to watching a funeral on tv.
All the speakers were great but HRC and PBO were amazing. Maya Cummings - what a brave woman! His daughters had me in tears.
Pres. Clinton has always had that rasp in his voice. He did look tired.
malaise
(269,054 posts)It wasn't his voice - his eyes and his gait - it could be as simple as a cold or flu. I hope I'm wrong.

(5,942 posts)kept me from turning it off. I was super emotional from beginning to end, and having her to talk to helped me get through it. The loss of such a great man is sad enough, but the emotional and stirring speeches also reinforced how vapid and cruel and inane our political discourse has become. He was obviously as genuinely wonderful a friend, husband, father, brother, and son as he was a politician. Although it was emotionally torturous for me at times, I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

(5,812 posts)...the Clinton years were good. It would be nice to have another POTUS like Clinton or Obama.
Today, watching the funeral, I realized how low our nation has gone.

(53,410 posts)It was when she came down to the first row. Bill looked little weak, like he was struggling to stand up. And he was quite subdued. I think he might be sick.

(32,086 posts)I thought Clinton looked like he had put on a little bit of weight. He seemed kind of gaunt there for a good while.
malaise
(269,054 posts)He does still have a lovely head of hair - that must piss off the Con
GoCubsGo
(32,086 posts)His hair has thinned a bit, still plenty of it there! Orange Hitler is probably jealous that Bill is 6'2" without the need of elevator shoes, too.

(31,261 posts)I have noticed that novic Vegans seem to look famished and off a lot. I see a few at the healthfood store that I shop at, when they self identify, I see that some look healthy and some look really weak.
GoCubsGo
(32,086 posts)He did lose a ton of weight after doing so. Some of his gaunt look may have just come from him losing so much weight. it was a pretty stark difference.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)when he spoke at the democratic national convention in favor of President Obama. I didn't see him much since then.
I don't know how long new Vegans take to get a routine. I have only seriously played with my diet once, and in the end it didn't go well.

(36,926 posts)to be reduced to tears. Love you Elijah.

(4,103 posts)It's a damn shame that fuckbag Trump's drama sucks up so much of the airwaves because Elijah Cummings deserves far more airtime than he's getting.
And your comment about Bill Clinton, I noticed it back in 2016, he seemed shaky back then and unfortunately it seems to have progressed.
malaise
(269,054 posts)so I turned off cable and watched this on YouTube.
I always watch political funerals but this one was special - watching civilized people is a rare privilege these days. As sad as it was, the entire ceremony was a breath of fresh air.

Bill Clinton seemed a bit frail, more so than I've seen him in past appearances (got to see him from a front row seat at a rally for Hillary in Oct 2016, just three years ago).

(1,639 posts)Quasi-political. It would be hard to avoid any political tinge at all, but it was mostly what a funeral is supposed to be--a reflection of a life lived and a comfort to those in mourning.
Representative Cummings' daughters were a reminder that he was someone's dad, and virtually everyone can relate to their feelings.
President Clinton did seem a little off-track at times, but he's not a young man, despite the fine head of hair. It was hard not to smile at his self-deprecating humor when he referred to himself as President Obama's warm up act.
President Obama was wonderful, as usual. And Mrs. Cummings was amazing. If she runs for her late husband's seat, she will be a powerhouse in the Legislature.
The Bishop's rousing speech at the end was impressive. I was briefly reminded of the way the British Royal Family acted during parts of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding. The funeral service was both universal and richly embued with black culture. I hope all the white, conservative lawmakers across the land saw it and squirmed on the sticks up their collective butts.
The faith and determination that saw African-Americans through one of the greatest wrongs to afflict the human race may very well be the salvation of our democracy.
malaise
(269,054 posts)I don't watch royal weddings so I can't respond to that part
Collimator
(1,639 posts)When the African-American clergyman (I haven't looked up his name, sorry.) spoke with joyous fulsomeness about love. The stiff-upper-lip Brits clearly had never seen any such passion in a church service before.
It was funny--not because the clergyman was silly--but because the Royal family was so surprised.

(63,873 posts)whole thing too. I had tears in my eyes all the way through. Yes. he was good man and caring, humble too.
Why do the good ones go first????
But Elijah had both sides get together for 2 days...
...hmmm Elijah works in mysterious ways. Got everyone to church too.
