President Trump has been trying to discredit the Justice Departments investigation into his campaigns relationship with Russia for most of his presidency. His attempts to do so have mostly come through his Twitter account and yelling over Marine One on the White House lawn. But when Attorney General William Barr took over the Justice Department in February, it quickly became clear federal law enforcement resources would be used to go after the people who conducted the probe.
It didnt take long. When Special Counsel Robert Mueller released his findings in April, Trump and Barr teamed up to misrepresent them. The following month, Barr tapped a John H. Durham, a U.S. attorney in Connecticut, to look into the origins of the investigation. Now, the New York Times reported on Thursday, Durhams inquiry is no longer just an inquiry; its officially a full-scale criminal investigation.
In other words, the Justice Department is now investigating itself in service of the presidents political agenda.
When asked about the investigation Friday morning, Trump called Barr a highly prestigious man while defending the move to pursue criminal charges. I think youre gonna see a lot of really bad things, he said.

Whatever.
The one standard tactic he always falls back on is the countersuit. He always counter sues. Now, he thinks the DoJ is his private law firm and his recent moves, orchestrated by Bill Barr, is his new form of "countersuit." Now, he is "counter investigating." This works in the right wing echo chamber, because they don't need any evidence or proof. They just need the allegations and they go into attack mode.
It remains to be seen if the institutions will hold. There are supposed to be safeguards to prevent Executive Department officials from directing Justice Department officials from directing politically driven investigations. The problem now is that the person in charge does not seem to have any moral compass against these actions. Bill Barr is an authoritarian who believes in the unitary executive, essentially the President as Dictator.
Scary times.
