My guess is that the school was more worried about protests or students speaking their mind to any reporter happening by than student safety. The college is affiliated with one of the Baptist denominations. It's the kind of school which has a page and a half long dress code, and forbids students of the 'opposite' gender from visiting the dorm rooms etc.

It's not likely that they decided to give him an award overnight. So I assume that they were just keeping that little gem quiet until the day.
