While Trump spoke at Benedict, HBCU students were told to stay in their dorms

Benedict students were told to stay in their dorms while President Donald Trump is on campus, students told The State.

“Once the president arrives on campus, students are pretty much being told to stay in our dorms,” said Kevin Reese, a senior marketing major at Benedict College.

{snip}

“The campus was closed and streets surrounding the campus were shut down to all vehicle traffic from 1:30 p.m. -3:00 p.m. Faculty, staff, and student who were on campus were asked to stay inside, but if anyone needed to go to work or to another building, it was not problem,” Hunter said.

Benedict sophomore Nia Byas also said the campus was on “lockdown.” Other local media outlets have quoted Benedict College students saying they were asked not to leave their dorm rooms during the president’s visit. The State spoke to student protesters who also said they were told to stay in their dorms from 3-4 p.m.

Can't have those "students of color" wandering around the campus while Trump is there, you know. Better if they stay inside and out of sight, see....

I do know that those who attended that fake program honoring Trump had nothing to do with that college. I'm sure they didn't want to see a bunch of black HBCU students protesting, so they were told to stay in their dorm rooms. It's very sad that they followed those instructions.

Catering to Donald J. Trump's racism and the racism of his supporters is a huge mistake, and I'm surprised that an HBCU tolerated any hint that they do that. But, apparently, the school did tolerate it. More's the pity.

even directly related to the school. Their name was dropped from the weekend events.

This is a scandal. They forced the kids to stay in their dorms in order to stage this event for Trump? Disgusting.

If I hear more I'll post.

We all know how people of color frighten police for their very lives just by walking away from or towards them. No telling how many of their lives were spared by hiding away all afternoon.

we have come to accept in this country. Why is there not universal outrage over such an order to students at a HBCU? We are losing our independence as citizens through fear of our own government. That cannot be allowed to stand.

I'm not a person of color or any other sort of minority, but how can I not be outraged by this?

while Trump was there. Now, Trump's gone, so they can come out. There is something terribly wrong with what I just wrote, don't you think? Appeasing Donald Trump like that is pure racism. Racism is alive and well.

However, it did not prevent the students at that college from being restricted to their dorms while Trump was there. That's the subject of my post, not what happened subsequently.

In my opinion, the leadership of that college made a very serious mistake in handling a visit from a President. By effectively preventing students from expressing themselves, they perpetuated and enabled the racism Trump espouses.

So, it's good that Harris intervened, but that doesn't change what happened.
